While Scottie Scheffler finished his sixth victory of the season on Sunday at the Procore Championship – a tournament that he came in to stay sharp for next week’s Ryder Cup – Lanto Griffin was overcome with emotions about where he was and what could have been.
Griffin, a 37-year-old professional, tore his L5-S1 disk in 2020 and had to undergo a microdiscectomy in 2022. Last season, Griffin only had one top 10 in 22 starts. He finished 158th in the FedEx Cup Fall classification, but won PGA Tour Q-school to keep his entire PGA Tour membership.
Griffin’s season 2025 was rocky. He ended T9 open at the Farmers Insurance and then missed four of his next six cuts.
“Sometimes if you work hard and work on the wrong stuff, you get worse, and that is a bit of what happened,” said Griffin on Sunday, after he had shot 65 to end Solo third. “My work ethic has not changed. I went a bit on the wrong path and it went back.”
After he withdrew from the Corales Puntacana championship, Griffin returned to his old coach, Todd Anderson, at TPC Sawgrass. He also started working with Alex Bennett, director of athletic performance. A T14 on the Barracuda and T23 at the seasonal Wyndham championship brought Griffin 142E in the rankings in the Fedex Cup drop and needs some magic to crack the top 100 to retain its fully exempt status.
The inhabitant of California opened on Thursday with a seven under 65 on the ProCore Championship and followed with rounds of 70 and 71. He came to the pace of the pace of 54-hole leader Ben Griffin on Sunday last round, but he Birdied six of his first holes to make his first tour in the mix. Griffin made two more birdies at the back to finish 17, two shots behind the brand determined by Scheffler.
Griffin’s Hot Sunday spoke to him to the 98th in the FedEx Cup Fall taxation, just within the number to keep his card … at the moment.
“It’s huge,” Griffin told NBC’s Kira K. Dixon after the round. “One of my goals this week was to give myself a chance [to get into the Baycurrent Classic]. Hopefully I will come in there now, and we have that [six] Tournaments left. It is clear that you want to win, but keep your job … I went to Q school last year and won the lives somehow [of my career]. This week it all came together. I will come up a bit short.
“A little bit of scottie was not here, but I know that all fans enjoyed it. Just proud of myself. … Playing good wave is so much fun and playing bad Golf is pretty brutal on your psyche. I have put a lot of hard work in these last five weeks since Wyndham, so it’s a bit nice to see it coming together.”
Scheffler and second place Ben Griffin, the only players who ended up for Lanto Griffin, were two of the 10 US Ryder Cup players in the field, who added SAP to a normally sleepy autumn event. Although the emotional interview by Lanto Griffin and his open recognition that Scheffler emphasizes a problem in the field, the PGA Tour will eventually have to solve.
When the new CEO Brian Rolapp spoke at the Tour Championship, he spoke about the need for the PGA Tour to adhere to his three leading principles: competitive parity, scarcity and simplicity. Rolapp comes from the NFL, and one thing that the NFL does better than any other Sports League is making stories that are easy for fans to follow and be invested.
As our guide, let’s look at the FedEx Cup Fall Slate, Lanto Griffin and what happened on the ProCore Championship.

Because it is currently built, the FedEx Cup Fall serves two goals: it is a vehicle for players who ended up outside the top 50 in the Fedex Cup to try to make their way to the first two characteristic events of the following season, and it is membership of the Tour for the following season.
If Rolapp is looking for simplicity in its product, Sunday in Napa would be much easier to digest and understand without Scheffler, Ben Griffin and the rest of the USA team in the field. The commitment would be more clearly defined if those in the field played to expand their career or to increase their status on tour. Instead, the ProCore 2025 was a mashup of the long -term status quo of the PGA Tour and the Purgatorial State in which he is located since the reform of Liv Golf after the arrival of Liv Golf.
Rolapp, who competing for competing and gaining the attention of people in the Doom-Scrolling era, promised to make important changes where they are needed. If he wants to follow the model of his old employer, cleaning up the FedEx Cup Fall Slate is to be easier to digest a good place for the masses – after he has found a way to make a postseas model that all sports fans can understand and follow.
If the deployment of the FedEx Cup drop would be defined more clearly, the product would be increased. It is easy for people to understand that player X must win to keep his job and player Y must do Z to be eligible for the selection events. But things get muddy when you happen to X and Y, while top players occasionally show up to play a salary, to make up with sponsor deals or, in this case, prepared for an event that the PGA Tour does not even have.
All of this leads to the question that you don’t want people to ask: What does this mean?
Sunday’s events in Napa could have been filled with a high drama, while Griffin tried to get his second career victory on the line, while others try to claw their way back to him behind him. Instead, we got a nice duel between Scheffler and Ben Griffin who ended with the world No. 1 who took another trophy home, talking about how prepared he feels for the Ryder Cup and is not willing to commit to return to Napa for his defending defense. That makes sense from the fact that he normally does not play the event.
Rolapp has a lot on his plate while he looks under the hood and tries to polish and refine the PGA Tour product with its three principles as its leading light. But if he starts delivering ‘important change’, the events in the Wijnland are a good example of how Pro-Golf can understand his product easier and can make it more attractive for both the Die-hard Golffan and the Casual Sportfan: clearly define a story that is easy to follow and use the simplicity, scarcity and competitive parity of the schedule of the schedule.
