Ivan Ivanov won his second consecutive big title by colleague Bulgarian Alexander Vasilev with 7-5, 6-3 to be beat in the US Open Final Saturday.
“I played great and our thoughts came on. We met Alexander in the final,” said Ivanov. ‘[It was a] Full Bulgarian final and full Bulgarian crowd. I am very happy that this happened, and I am very happy that I have taken success today. ”
The 16-year-old converted five of his nine breakpoints and hit 19 winners to rise to victory in 74 minutes. The top seed saved two of the four breaking points that he encountered opposite his fifth opponent.
“He came back. He started to put more pressure on me, and I really felt it,” said Ivanov. “I tried to escape and I tried to make those moments as short as possible, which I am very happy [about] Today, because I was able to do it very briefly. And on 5-all-all I managed to break back and then take my serve. So I am very happy with that. ”
This century Ivanov became the third boy who won Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season and joined Countryman Grigor Dimitrov and Filip Peliwo. It was a special end to his most important campaign, in which he climbed to number 1 in the ITF Junior Rankings.
“I mean, look at the city. We are in a huge city, sometimes in such a large stadium,” said Ivanov. “The crowd, the people, the organization, it’s all that makes that tournament special.”
The 16-year-old trains on the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar and received congratulations from Nadal on Saturday.
“Congratulations Ivan winning @wimbledon & @usopen junior?!” Nadal posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Congratulations also with all the @rnadalacademy team! ????”
