Willson Contreras had an epic collapse when he was thrown from the series opener between the cardinals and pirates, had to be stopped by coaches and unintentionally hit one with his bat while crashing over a third strike in the bottom of the seventh.
St. Louis led Pittsburgh, 6-5, when Contreras was sustained by home plate UMP Derek Thomas.
While Contreras ran away, he apparently looked back and said something in the direction of the referee, which led to the casting and the subsequent chaos.
Contreras turned around and stormed back at Thomas when Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol tried to stop him, but the heated ball player had to be taken away by his manager and another coach when he hit his helmet to the ground and screamed against the referee.
Bench -Coach Daniel Descalso tried to move him to the dugout of the cardinals, but not before he turned and launched the bat he held in his hand in the direction of a referee, but he hit coach Brant Brown.
While things started to calm down, a bucket of chewing gum was thrown on the field, with pieces spread over the first basic line.
Marmol was also cast out of the game during the incident.
Crew Chief Jordan Baker Jeff Jones from the Belleville News-Democrat told That contreras and marmol were thrown for “vulgar” language – although he was not close enough to hear too much of the exchange that were placed on second base.
Baker too Jones told That Contreras made contact with a referee, but could not speak to his intention.
The cardinals got stuck to win the game and start a four-game set with the Pirates on a positive note.
St. Louis is currently 5 ½ games back from a Wildcard spot in the National League.
