Both Williams drivers are excluded from the results of the qualification at the Singapore Grand Prix because of a DRS infringement.
Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz originally qualified on Saturday evening 12th and 13th on Saturday evening, but during the quarreling of the scrutineing, both cars were “exceeded” the maximum limit of 85 mm on both sides of the rear wing shower “of the upper element. The case was referred to the Stewards and Williams.
“During the hearing, the competitor admitted that, although their own measurement prior to the qualification had shown that the component was within the tolerance, the measurement was subsequently performed by the appointed FIA officials, a larger gap than permitted and therefore did not correspond to the required dimension.”
“The competitor did not dispute the measurement procedure, the methodology or the accuracy of the measuring equipment used by FIA.
James Vowles, Williams Team Principal, says that the team is already trying to understand how it found the wing legally before he qualifies, but accepts that it was outside the regulations on the FIA tests.
“This is bitter disappointing for the team and we are urgently investigating how this happened,” said Vowels. “At no time we were looking for a performance advantage and the rear wings had passed our own checks earlier in the day, but there is only one measurement that matters and we fully accept the FIA pronunciation.
“We have a car that can score points here this weekend and will do everything we can to fight tomorrow from the back of the grid, and our processes will immediately assess to ensure that this no longer happens.”
With both drivers excluded from the results, the stewards then gave them position to start the race from the back of the schedule because of the satisfactory round times they had put into practice. Williams can strengthen the wing to ensure that it meets the racing instructions and still starts from the back of the schedule, as Haas did with Esteban Ocon in the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan.
