Will undo Warren’s solid start by ‘shameful’ error: ‘worst game’

Baltimore – Will Warren bounced back well from a rough outing against the Red Sox his last time out.

But it was the bouncer who came through his legs on Friday evening in the sixth inning that will keep him the most.

After a 4-2 loss for the Orioles on Camden Yards, Warren remained that he could not make, the first of back-to-back errors that cost the Yankees cost a few runs that turned out to be the difference.

Warren had only given up one point through five innings when he held Jordan Westburg with a throw to distract the sixth inning.

It turned into a broken-bat Comebacker of the hill that leaned over Warren to the field, only for the ball to bounce through his legs after he seemed to take a heavy bouncer.

The batman who flew his way was in his head, Warren said, but he didn’t want to use that as an excuse and called it “embarrassing” and “probably the worst game I’ve ever made in my life.”

“I mean, yes, I looked up and the ball had a twist,” Warren said. “But at the end of the day I caught ground balls a thousand times before, so I had to play that.

“Certainly was a bit hard for myself, especially not to make that piece. In principle, they donated a point. Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] Gets the two-run bomb and it is like: “Ugh, it would have been a tie game if I broke that.” ‘

If he does, the two left-handed people would be the first pair of Yankees starters that won 18 games in the same season since CC Sabathia and Phil Hughes did it in 2010.

The last few teammates for every victory at least 18 games in a season were Gerrit Cole and Justin Landander at the Astros 2019. In the expansion age (since 1961) there were six pairs of Yankees teammates to hit that threshold in the same season.

Austin Slater got the start in the left field against Orioles Lefty Trevor Rogers and hit 1-out-4 with three strikeouts. He is now 3-out-18 with 12 strikeouts like a Yankee.
