Will there be a trade that comes out of left field?

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period was on TSN Radio in Montreal and asked if a trade could come out of nowhere, which no one is currently tracking.

Host: “Okay, so it’s interesting. You bring this up (teams getting creative and adding elsewhere) because I wanted to go around the Canadiens a little bit, because a year ago, right now, the Canadiens did exactly what you’re suggesting the Oilers should do, which was pick up a $3 million defenseman, and they picked up Alex Carrier. Although Carrier is struggling a little bit now, and I’m not saying he’s a guy who can move, but the Canadiens are dealing with some defensive issues.

NHL Injuries: Stars, Kings, Rangers, Flyers, Penguins, Capitals and the Jets

Montreal might want to acquire a defenseman like this, and the Oilers might want to acquire a defenseman like this due to cap restrictions. Who are the defensemen you could back up as Alex Carrier was a subtle positive move for the Canadiens last year. Who is the move available to?”

Dave Pagnotta: “You have to, and this is where there isn’t a readily available guy who fits that specific description. What Kent Hughes did was poke and prod and try to see, ‘Hey, what would it take to get this guy?’ For example, these are the kind of left-field moves that you don’t see coming, that you don’t expect, but that do pay off, which is what happened in this particular case.

You look at the teams that are selling and what is available. They don’t have those pieces that make that kind of money. Like Justin Faulk is available in St. Louis, but he has a bigger hit. That won’t apply. Maybe Derek Forbort in Vancouver, but he’s injured and we don’t know the extent of that specific injury. He may be out for an extended period of time. He’s been gone longer than they expected.

And then you look at what Nashville has. They don’t have that piece. They just signed (Nick) Perbix. Now they’ve brought in Nic Haag, and he’s five and a half. You don’t have that piece. Nick Blankenburg, maybe on 775, but he doesn’t fit the same role, I think, as a guy like Carrier. The options in that area are therefore limited and already available.

NHL Rumors: Interest in Kiefer Sherwood is growing and the Ottawa Senators

You have to go out there, and you have to be aggressive in filling a need. You have to convince a team to move a certain player. Ramus Andersson is available in Calgary. You’ll have to pay a premium to get it, and it costs $4.55 million.

So if you look at someone in that $2-$3 million range who is effective, like Carrier, they’re already pretty effective pieces for their teams. So you have to be able to convince a club to pull the trigger.”
