The Toronto Maple Leafs will open the training camp with $ 1.9 million in CAP room, a full 23-man selection and a forward group reformed by the departure and the arrivals of important players. “We have a number of new players to integrate,” said Treliving. “It is clear that we will be a bit different. But I am excited. We now have a lot of bodies, and that will find out … If you can find a way to make yourself better, I think you always do that – leading to the camp, the whole camp. In this stage we probably go inside the way we are now. But who are we, right?
The Leafs, eliminated by the final champion Florida Panthers in round 2 last spring, can follow in their footsteps this season. Instead of adding more this summer, Toronto can add later in the year. “We do have some cap -space. But we want to see how things play, at least get into the camp, and then you have three weeks before the real bullets start flying. But yes, we will definitely keep seeing if there are ways to help us.”
Florida made various movements in the season, including a blockbuster deal for Brad Marchand and the trade for Seth Jones-to bring their schedule over the top. Treliving acknowledged that the Leafs could do something similar, use the camp and the early weeks of the season to evaluate before they got a chance.
With some CAP available, a few players who are still being shopped and expectations high, speculation will only grow on what the Maple Leafs may have in sleeves.
