Will Still has taken to Instagram to speak for the first time since being sacked as Southampton manager.
Will Still was tasked with taking Southampton back to the Premier League but failed to score a goal for a side that dropped out of the top flight with little fight. He was fired in November and replaced by Tonda Eckert since.
The former boss of Lens and Reims reported this on Instagram that he believes his dismissal was harsh, but that he admitted that he had not done everything right. As part of a long message he wrote:
“But no journey is without challenges. There have been difficult personal periods and being let go by Southampton in November was one of them. Has it hurt? Of course. I am passionate about my work as a head coach, I love the job and building something with all the people I am lucky enough to work with.”
“Criticism can be harsh, but that’s part of it. I also know that I haven’t done everything right and on reflection there are things I would have done differently. But through it all, I appreciate all the opportunities I have been given in this game so far and this time off has given me new energy, perspective and an even stronger sense of how much I know I have to give.”
Will Still’s difficult spell at Southampton
Still landed on the south coast with a lot of promise after two decent periods with parties in France. The problem was that the 33-year-old came up against a team that was on a downward trajectory and although he tried to turn things around tactically, he couldn’t move his side in the right direction.
The manager backed in the summer window when the club signed Tom Fellows and Finn That isbut failed to advance certain players considered deadweight by fans and missed a number of targets. The result left an unbalanced side that did not suit Still’s tactics.
Despite playing tactful football at times, Southampton could not put together enough 90-minute performances.
The fans were divided on Still, but in a results-oriented business the writing was on the wall as Saints continued to slide down the table.
Will Still’s Southampton record
Ultimately, after a run of just four wins in his 16-match managerial reign, Still was relieved of his duties and Eckert was initially placed in the temporary role.
Life after Still for Southampton
Eckert’s temporary spell went better than most could imagine, and the German was appointed permanent manager in due course. Unfortunately for Southampton, form has since fallen off a cliff.
In the Championship, the Saints are without a win in their last eight games. At one point Eckert looked on course to take Saints to the play-offs, but now they are in freefall again.
After losing 2-1 to Hull City, Southampton take on Sheffield United tomorrow in desperate need of a win or Eckert could suffer the same fate as Still did just four months ago.
