Wigan Athletic are to sack Ryan Lowe, reports Pete O’Rourke.

Wigan Athletic are set to sack manager Ryan Lowe, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, after the Latics were thumped 6-1 by Peterborough United on Saturday.

The defeat leaves Wigan Athletic in 22nd place in League One after three straight defeats, having won just one of their last 11 games in the competition.

Lowe took charge of WAFC in March 2025, but in 49 games he has won just 12, with a winning percentage of 24% being his lowest as a manager to date.

Wigan Athletic’s next five games

Whoever replaces Lowe will have a huge job to do. WAFC are just two points from safety but have not looked upwards all season and also have a number of tough games on the agenda, with the next one in three days’ time against former boss Leam Richardson and his Reading side.

Expect an interim manager to take charge of that game and possibly the next away game against Arsenal in the FA Cup. The Latics then return to the league with a home game against Luton Town, before heading to Stockport County and a home game against Huddersfield Town at the end of the month.

What went wrong for Ryan Lowe at Wigan Athletic?

League One News

The WAFC job has long been difficult. But from the start, Lowe didn’t seem like a very inspired appointment.

He did well for Preston beforehand, but their fans were keen to see him. His football wasn’t the best to watch and Preston continued to get worse and worse, with Paul Heckingbottom’s subsequent success at the club proving that getting rid of Lowe was the right decision.

Wigan Athletic also don’t have the most resources. The club has been working on a tight budget for some time now, but Lowe was able to sign Dara Costelloe last summer, but the former Burnley man hasn’t exactly hit the League One spotlight yet.

The club has made some good signings throughout the season, but Lowe cannot get them out of this rut. Now expect the club to be very limited in who they can bring in and who wants to take over the job, and expect a relegation battle in the second half of the season.
