On this week’s fully equipped podcast I talked to Johnny Wunder and Ian Fraser about the Mini Driver. Who is it for? Why is it useful? When is it a bad idea? And perhaps even more important, can it replace my driver? Let’s answer that with the first access to our new ‘Tasbuilders’, where we break down the decisions you need to make to build the most efficient set of tools for your game.
I am convinced that you should not replace your driver with a mini driver if you try to build an efficient golf bag with 14 tools.
I understand the concept. Many golfers find the smaller shape and a shorter length of a mini driver easier to control, which means that they touch more fairways. But this usually comes with a sacrifice in the ball speed, which means a distance sacrifice. The argument is (angry) on social media made to me that giving up a few meters to hit more fairways is worth the assessment. My standard reaction is that if their mini-director can perform their driver, they should not look to get the driver out of the bag. They must replace the driver with a better one.
The victory of Tommy Fleetwood at the Tour Championship 2025, and that makes the FedEx Cup a great example. Fleetwood is the most productive mini driver user from Professional Golf. He is essentially the face of the mini driver franchise. But even he was able to change his driver setup so that he could feel more comfortable in situations with high stress to get the advantage that he is getting closer to his approach. On Sunday at the Tour Championship, Fleetwood hit three T -pieces with his driver he had hit with a mini driver in 2024. You could see that he had full confidence in the driver, and that he used that comfort and power to finally claim his first PGA Tour victory.
But it’s fun.
The reason that many players hit the mini drivers segment so well is because the clubs make an optimal launch profile. Usually this is compared to the driver with a higher launch and a lower spider because of the increase in the loft. That brings me back to a point that we made on the podcast with Lucas Bro: most players hit the ball too low. The difference between a mini driver and a fairway wood is that the mini driver has a lower spider profile and that you will wave the club differently. Because you go up the ball higher with the mini, you start beating the ball a little more, raising the launch and turning over the fairway wood.
If you would take a player who would rather touch the mini driver and fit them into a driver who gave them the same launch conditions, but with 3-4 MPH club head speed faster, those players would give you all the money in their wallets. And that’s my point. That is possible. There is no reason that a player cannot achieve this. It may not be easy, and it should definitely go to a qualified fitter, but if a player can feel under pressure to exchange his driver for a mini driver that they have bought on a whim, the investment of a good assembly for a good driver should be a no brainer.
Taylormade R7 Quad Custom Mini Driver
Performance for the modern player inspired by one of the most iconic models in the history of Taylormade, the R7 Quad Mini Driver is a tribute to what has come earlier, while in the same breath he is created his own modern identity. It is that very modern design that proven Taylormade technologies includes to give golfers versatility and playability. R7 Quad Weighting System The new Quad Weighting System has four movable weights (13 G X2, 4G X2) that offer the ultimate spin management and shot form control. Forward CG creates a penetrating flight that is most suitable for maximizing the distance, while rear CG helps to prioritize control and ease of use of the deck. Shot shape can also be refined to create the most optimal flight. Extra weights can be purchased for a wider range of adjustability. Infinity Carbon Crown A new Satin Infinity Carbon Crown has been added to the R7 Quad Mini Driver Chassis, creating a stunning look, while saving weight for better mass optimization. The cosmetic package is clean, elegant and self -confidence.

Slower speed problems
This is especially important for players who do not have much speed. At lower speeds, the gap between the mini driver and the driver is greater. The bullet speed wins and forgiveness of a full-sized driver should shine more. This is where it becomes necessary that these players do not give up to find the right combination of the driver. It would be stupid to specify the speed and forgiveness of a larger package in the full-size driver. I understand the trauma that is caused by a poorly performing driver. We have all been there. But the downgrade remotely is not worth the sacrifice.
On the PGA Tour, the number 1 player in the vicinity of the hole of 175-200 meters had an average proximity of 28 feet, 4 inches. From 125-150 meters, the number 1 player had an average proximity of 19 ‘-4 ”. That is a difference of 9 feet with about a two-club advantage. Let’s now place that in a well perspective. The number 1 player in putts of larger than more than 25 feet had a brand percentage of 9.72%. The number 1 player in putts from 15-20 feet had a brand percentage of 29.63%. That is a 20% better chance to make your putt. Why would you take that from yourself? I know, I know. Even if I type this, I can hear you say: “But Jake, I can’t keep my driver on the planet”. And for that I argue with you again. Get fit for a new driver.

A higher fluctuations speeds, the lines can start to fade, and that is where a player can choose to play a mini driver for a preference for flight form instead of a performance change. Many players have chosen a mini driver as their migration club when a cut is their choice with the driver. This allows them to work on both sides, and the characteristics of the draw can usually make up for the distance loss that they can see with the mini.
This is actually something I tried for a few months. I am bad with Fairway Woods, and I never really needed them from the deck anyway, so a mini driver was perfect for me. I hit a nice little draw with my driver and needed something that I was able to form reliable from left to right, sometimes very aggressive, without worrying about a huge Spinny Miss on the left. What I was finally building was an Elyte Mini 13.5 degrees, which I came down and weighed. The work did perfectly on a short 42.5 inch. I could open the club in my hands and rock to the left with a nice little cut. My home course is short and tight, and there are a few holes where the mini driver is invaluable. Holes where I still only have a sandwig in the green.
The correct replacement
The last swap we have to talk about is the swap that should happen. The Fairway Wood Swap. I am the perfect example of this. Until recently (yesterday actually) I was the worst fairway wood player in the world. A 3-wood was absolutely useless in my bag, so I did not hesitate about filling that lock with a mini-driver. But I finally got the feeling that I was missing a useful tool in my bag, so I added a 4-wood and clicked. It happened to be a club that plays a double role: the Titleist GT280.
This 280cc “mini driver” is more a “maxi wood” in my eyes. It is much easier to hit the deck than one of the other larger mini drivers on the market, and just as easy to get rid of the tee. I would not say that it is as long as the Taylormade, or as consistent as the Elyte, but it is the best mix of all worlds. I actually think having the GT280 in my bag enabled me to get better in touching Fairway Woods, which ironically cost a place in my bag.

But if you can pay the lock in your bag and you can justify that you have a consistent secondary T -T option with the possibility to get rid of the deck with the strange chance that you need it, I will support it the most. Titleist was very smart in this release. They gave the market a different option, and a more justify.
At the end of the day your bag is made of 14 tools that all have to do a job. If your No. 2 tool is a mini driver, great. I like mini drivers. Big Mini Driver Guy. Team Mini Driver completely. But if it’s your number 1 tool, we have problems.
If you are part of the problem, book an appointment on a local true specification in your area.
