Watford fired Paulo Pezzolano because he fell out with the majority of players over system and personnel changes. according to Alex Crook.

Watford have a good track record when it comes to breaking managers quickly.

The Hornets’ next boss will be their twentieth in the last decade, which equates to at least two per season. Paulo Pezzolano was only hired in the summerreplacing Tom Cleverley at the helm, a move that is unpopular among fans.

And just nine games into the Championship season it has been reported that Pezzolano has been relieved of his duties at Vicarage Road. An immediate replacement is also in line, with Javi Gracia set to return for a second stint.

The decision has caused shock among fans. Despite debate over whether the Uruguayan boss could really lead Watford back to the top of the Championship, he has them in a respectable 11th place after taking seven points from the last three games.

But now, reporter Alex Crook has claimed why Watford sacked Pezzolano.

Crook writes on X that the Hornets called because Pezzolano has been feuding with the majority of his players. This is due to the ‘constant change of personnel and system’, which leaves them confused.

Additionally, Crook adds that Gracia’s return will be driven by Scott Duxbury, the club’s chairman and CEO.

Watford’s hierarchy appear to have forced a change from Paulo Pezzolano

Watford’s owners and the club’s hierarchy are certainly not ones to back their bosses when the going gets tough. Often the first signs of struggle and setbacks are met with change.

However, the decision to relieve Pezzolano of his duties feels a little different, and it is another indication of how difficult it can be for bosses to succeed at Vicarage Road.

It can be difficult to bounce back from a conflict with players, but it’s fair to say these are just teething problems as Pezzolano adapts to a new team and gets to grips with a new competition. Perhaps with time they could have adapted to his ways.

Yet the trigger appears to have been pulled. The players’ perspective is the one the club seems to have sided with, and only time will tell if that was justified.

Can Javi Gracia revive Hornets’ hopes?

In a bid to realize their ambitions, Watford make the bold call to return to one of their more successful bosses.

In fact, no manager has managed the Hornets more games than Javi Gracia since Gianfranco Zola. Javi Gracia was at the helm from January 2018 to September 2019, leading them to an 11th-place finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup final.

The club dreams of reaching those heights again. It will be quite a task for Gracia to get them towards the championship, let alone back to their previous highs.

Not all management reunions pay off, and Gracia risks souring his legacy. If he succeeds, it will only strengthen him.
