The breakthrough victory of Tommy Fleetwood at the Tour Championship was huge for Taylormade in more than one way.
To begin with, it was the 13th victory of the Spider Putters of Taylormade, who were the winning putters on the PGA Tour in 2025. But also, it was the second victory of the year for the QI35 driver of the company and the first to be an event with an opposite field.
While Fleetwood played the QI35 throughout the season, the most famous athletes of Taylormade, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and no. 2 Rory McIlroy, who combined this season for eight victories and three large titles, largely maintained on last year’s QI10 drivers.
Nevertheless, the QI35 has been one of the more popular drivers of the year in the retail trade, therefore, in the episode of this week of Golf’s fully equipped, co-guesthouse Jake Morrow, point out how Tour use does not really say something about how good a driver is or not.
“Like having heads where you can pick up better levers with Qi35 than you could with Qi10, I have heard of a couple of fitters, the amateur game and the weekend man better made in a QI35 product than a QI10 product,” said Morrow. “Only because two boys on tour who are whole, whole, very good, play an old special model, let’s keep in mind, does not mean that Qi35 failed because it kills in the retail trade and in the fitting of bays.”
Colleague host Johnny Wunder pointed out that McIlroy and Scheffler are not the only players who play older driver heads, and in fact it is a bit of a trend on the Tour, considering how good 2024 product was.
Wunder remembered that Scheffler has a Qi35 driver that he likes as much as his QI10.
“It’s just as good or maybe even a little better,” Wunder said. “The opportunity he had to switch was when his driver failed at the PGA championship. So he had a Qi10 and a Qi35 in his safe, right? But the psychology was like: ‘I don’t want to change to a major. So I just want to look at another crown.
“That’s why it’s still in the bag.”
The guest of this week, Ian Fraser, also pointed out that Scheffler was limited in his ability to thoroughly test the QI35 at the start of the season because of his hand injury. McIlroy also had some limitations.
“He was not in great shape at the start of the season, and you will never turn from drivers into something new if you are not in great shape, and you try to find it a bit,” said Fraser. “So that kind of test window where he would normally step into a new driver, he missed it because of the injury on his hand.
