While fans dream of a Zelda: Ocarina or Time Remake, a reader explains why the N64 is his favorite console and why it can never be defeated.
What people say is that their favorite VideogaMa console always has a lot to do with what Whey received as a child first. But my first console was a SNES and yet my favorite came out, the Nintendo 64. The N64 is quite unusual for Nintendo because it was not a big failure or a great success. It was not or both, but I consider it the most important console ever, and not only for me personally, but gaming as a whole.
Before the N64, 3D -graphic images did not actually exist for most people. You could see some very simple -looking things on PC and games such as Daytona USA had just started crawling in Arcades, but the N64 and PS1 were in the bleeding edge of 3D -Tech in games and there is no doubt that Nintendo did much more than Sony.
The only thing we received for the PS1 launch was a great port of Ridge Racer and some technical demos, but for the N64 we have Super Mario 64. Something so amazing that it is perhaps the most influential video game of all time. At the time it seemed like a moving, interactive Pixar film and completely reinvented what a video game could be. It was so advanced that for years later everything that tried to copy it did not even come close.
But in a sense, I think super Mario 64 gets too much credit. Not that everything I just said was not true, but much of them was due to the console itself, where Mario 64 was far from the only groundbreaking game. Moreover, the console itself made analogue control at night, up to the point at which Sony had to re -design their controllers quickly to record it.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time was just as influential, perhaps more. Rockstar said it had a major impact on GTA 3 and, like Mario 64, there was nothing so good for years. In addition to Nintendo’s own follow-up majora’s mask. It still seems impossible that such great games, which are still getting up today, can be made on such old consoles, but even now fans ask for a complete remake, just to keep the name of the game alive.
Then consider the amazing images and water physics of Wave Race 64 or Lylat Wars, which introduced the concept of power feedback in console games. Or there was Goldenye 007, so First Person -shooters worked long before Halo worked on a console, with a perfect dark that it further perfected.

Heck, spoken about GTA 3, the game would not even exist if it was not for the Silicon Valley space station, to which most of the same team worked. Then there were tons of other great games such as pilot wings 64, 1080 ° snowboarding, Mario Tennis, Pokémon Snap, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Mystical Ninja with Goemon and much more.
Everyone can make a list of games that they like on an old console, but my point is that these games invent things that we still copy today. People talk about Super Mario 64 who is the biggest leap from one generation to the next, but it was not just that game. You can never do Mario 64 again, but you can never do Ocarina of time again, or Force Feedback for the second time, or get the first person shooters to a console and make it new.
All these scoops were reached by the N64 and until there is the right VR or something else, nothing else can be so groundbreaking because there is no other ground to break. I mean, what do you think the difference will be between PlayStation 5 and 6? Will it be like the leap from Super Mario World to Super Mario 64? I don’t think so.
It is not as if the N64 is hated or something, but I think it doesn’t get the attention it should be done nowadays, because some of his games are not so well outdated and the controller is strange. But without those games we would never have the games we have today, controllers would still only use a D-path and feedback would not be something.
That is why it is my favorite of all time and no matter how much better modern games, they will never be so influential.
