Malique Morris

Meredith Klein of Meredith & the Media spoke with Malique Morrissenior e-commerce correspondent at The Business of Fashion, about his work.

Here’s an excerpt:

You have been working in journalism for about ten years. You’ve worked at Man of the Hour magazine, Crain’s Detroit Business, The Information and now The Business of Fashion. What stories are you most proud of, and why?

  • A friend of mine sent me a job posting for an internship at Man of the Hour magazine, a men’s lifestyle magazine site aimed at men of color.
  • Writing specifically about fashion, I was given free rein to focus on the types of retail, brands and trends that I found really interesting. Every week I wrote about how to get a certain look for less money.
  • As for the stories I’m most proud of, I love digging deep into companies and getting scoops, which in some ways is a mandate in journalism to make a name for yourself. Getting exclusive offers shows that you are deeply entrenched in your coverage area from a source perspective.
  • When I was at The Information, I wrote about The RealReal, and that was a pretty full-circle moment for me, because when I was in high school, I had a class called Covering Companies, and I wrote reports on The RealReal. I learned how to read an earnings report, listen to an earnings call, talk to analysts – all aspects of doing business journalism I learned in that class.
  • My last story at The Information in 2022 was a big story about The RealReal, a luxury resale site that pioneered the used sales space. It had not been profitable, the CEO left, and the chief financial officer had recently left. I was able to go in-depth and talk to a lot of people in the C-suite and people across the company about what was really holding the company back from becoming a profitable company. I was also able to dive into the strategies and what led to the removal of the CFO by the CEO.
  • Lately I’ve been paying a lot of attention to companies that are coming my way, including Coupang’s acquisition of Farfetch. We were the ones who broke the news about Farfetch’s bankruptcy. I did a story earlier this year about the tension between the old guard and the new guard, Coupang.
