Why Shubman Gill was dropped from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad?

Shubman Gill’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad came as a surprise, especially as he was recently named vice-captain of the T20I.

As well as being left out of the 15-man squad, Gill has also been removed from the role of vice-captain, raising questions about the timing of the decision.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Gill’s negligence was mainly due to team combinations and not due to lack of confidence in his abilities.

Agarkar said the team management wanted wicketkeepers who could open the batting, prompting India to have two keeper-openers in the squad for flexibility.

“Shubman was the vice-captain; he is not in the team. In terms of continuity, you look at combinations. If your keeper is going to bat up top, you want a keeper who can play there,” Agarkar said.

India have opted for wicketkeeper-batters who can start the innings, narrowing the space for a specialist opener like Gill in the final XI plans.

Agarkar made it clear that Gill is still highly rated by the selectors and called it “unfortunate” that he had to miss out despite his quality.

“Shubman is a quality player and it’s a shame he has to miss. Combinations more than anything,” he added, stressing that someone had to be dropped given India’s depth.

Gill’s recent T20I form didn’t help his case either. In his last few appearances he achieved scores of 4, 0 and 28, but failed to make a strong impact at the top.

Soon after those matches, Gill picked up a niggle that ruled him out of the final T20Is against South Africa, breaking his momentum at a key stage.

Injuries were another concern. Gill recently suffered a neck sprain during the Test series in South Africa, which led to a hospital admission and forced him to miss the ODI series as well.

The selectors also wanted to make room for players who offer balance in the lower mid-range. The inclusion of Rinku Singh was considered essential to strengthen India’s finishing capabilities.

“Rinku comes, who gives the lower middle-order option,” Agarkar said, pointing to the need for power late in the innings.

Agarkar accepted that opinions may differ as selections are made, but emphasized that Gill’s exclusion should not be seen as a judgment on his long-term value.

“Sometimes it is difficult when you choose players. We still think he is a quality player. Someone has to miss something,” he said.

For now, Gill will have to wait for another opportunity, with the selectors making it clear that the door remains open for his return.
