Speaking of the Spaniard, Steve Johnson described him as the best competitor in tennis history. Johnson, who faced Nadal once in Madrid ten years ago, explained what it felt like to face the ultimate tennis warrior.
By Rafa, everyone knew the script. As always, he relied on his heavy forehand, relentless physical pressure and refusal to take even a step back. And yet the opponents were overwhelmed, survived and undone.
It had nothing to do with their unpreparedness; it’s just that Nadal’s competitiveness lived beyond tactics. In addition to his skill and athleticism, the king of clay made the difference with an extraordinary will to persevere.
The confrontation with the Mallorcan was the ultimate test of survival, with points extending to a battle of faith. When pain came into play, the 22-time Major champion refused to let it dictate the outcome.
Over the years, Rafa competed with chronic foot problems, knee problems, wrist injuries, abdominal tears and surgeries. However, he would always bounce back, extend his career and compete at the age of 38.
His titles were earned as much by resilience as by genius, and the victories came from suffering, rather than consolation. That mentality defined his incredible longevity and his refusal to surrender to time, injuries or rivals.
Last year, Nadal’s body finally stopped responding to the demands he placed on it. As we all know, Rafa suffered a serious hip injury during the 2023 Australian Open.
He embraced the longest break of his career, but refused to retire without giving it his all. He returned to action in 2024 and battled rivals and adversities between January and November before finally ending his incredible journey at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.

His legacy includes one of the richest collections of trophies. However, it goes further than that and encompasses the feeling that opponents carry with them on the field. They knew that no lead was safe, no plan foolproof and no match over until the last ball.
As Johnson emphasized, Nadal competed not only to win, but also to withstand defeat and all challenges. His fighting spirit may never be equaled, nor will his results.
The Spaniard attended the Next Gen ATP Finals last week and enjoyed the matches before returning home to spend the holidays with his family. After taking a year off, we see the King of Clay on the track more often.
He would like to embrace friendlies with his biggest rivals in the future, but only after raising his level. After all, the competitive spirit never dies!
“At any given moment you know exactly what Rafa is going to do and you prepare for it, but he always finds a way to get out and mess up your plans on the pitch.
He is without a doubt the best competitor in the history of the sport,” said Steve Johnson.
