Why Pirates were right to sign Marcell Ozuna instead of Andrew McCutchen

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally showed a willingness to invest in the roster, agreeing to a deal with a three-time All-Star outfielder/designated hitter Marcell Ozuna on Monday, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

But while there is some excitement about the Pirates signing a “big name,” there are also fans who are upset and confused about the decision.

The addition of the 35-year-old Ozuna marks the likely end of franchise icon Andrew McCutchen’s time in Pittsburgh, at least as an active player with the Pirates.

And while his departure could have been handled better, McCutchen, 39, has done just that himself indicated a lack of communication from the organization regarding his position on the team – for once the Pirates acted in the best interests of the franchise.

Marcell Ozuna is currently a better offensive player than Andrew McCutchen

At this point in their career, Ozuna is a better player and more worth betting on. Ozuna’s contract with Pittsburgh is reportedly a one-year, $12 deal with an option for 2027.

Ozuna’s production dipped in 2025, but he had a better season overall than McCutchen. Comparing the two, Ozuna hit just .232, though he did crush 21 home runs and record 68 RBI. He also posted a 1.6 bWAR with an OBP of .355 and hit .400.
