This weekend, Mackenzie Dern will look to finally claim a world title when she fights Virna Jandiroba for the vacant UFC strawweight championship. It’s an opportunity she’s been waiting for, and now she’s finally ready to go out and prove she deserves to have gold wrapped around her waist.
Sure, it won’t be easy, but that’s pretty much the story of Mackenzie Dern’s mixed martial arts career so far. While she has always been seen as someone who can go a long way in the sport, she has also experienced her fair share of ups and downs, to the point where some wondered whether or not she would get a title shot.
Alas, Mackenzie Dern has finally arrived, and she won’t stop until she finally achieves the goal she set for herself all those years ago. Before the resit against Jandiroba, Dern actually compared her attitude and mentality to that of former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.

Oliveira has clearly carved her own path to the top and when it comes to Dern, she still has a long way to go before she is called a legend in the world of women’s mixed martial arts. Still, at 32 years old, many would argue that she is about to enter her prime, so it will be interesting to see how she builds on that.
