Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has his reasons for not wanting to get married.
During a performance at Bobbi Althoff’s “Not this again” podcast, Durant explained that he “don’t know” if he could stay in a marriage with one person for the rest of his life.
“That’s not really a prenuptial agreement, though. I mean, because if you walk away, you at least have to give something,” Durant said when Althoff asked about a prenuptial agreement.
“… I think divorce is more realistic because the divorce rate is higher… However, that’s forever and you’re counting on it to be 50/50. I don’t know if I want to accept those odds.
“…It’s like the word marriage, like what the relationship is, like do I want to be with this person every day and stick around [out] with the same person every day.
“…I’ve never really dreamed of having a wedding day… When I go to a wedding I think ‘oh this is cool, oh it’s amazing’… It’s not like it has to happen in my head. But [a wedding] It remains a cool event.”
However, Durant is keeping an open mind.
“I’m sure this can happen,” he said. “I don’t close the door for nothing, but I don’t expect this to be the only thing I say.”
Durant, who previously said he was “close” to marriage, explained that he’s “not really looking for anything serious” at the moment.
“Just someone I can hang out with every day, someone I can talk to who’s cool, you know the basics, someone I can actually be friends with. And don’t look at it like [it’s girlfriend-boyfriend]” said Durant.
“That expectation that title, it’s that cloud that comes with it instead of us just being natural friends. No expectations are better for me because sometimes I might not want to talk to you or see you.”
Durant added that he previously lived with a woman, but they went their separate ways.
“Obviously we had to go our own way and figure ourselves out,” said Durant, who did not share a name. “We remain friends and still fall for it.”
Durant is fairly private about his personal life.
The NBA star got involved to former Lynx star Monica Wright in 2013, after they reportedly met at a high school All-Star game in 2006, but called it off shortly after.
Wright, a former NBA executive, went on to marry former professional basketball player Michael Rogers.
