While the Edmonton Oilers are trying to balance their selection of aging veterans with rising talent – something that rumors suggest that it holds the Connor McDavid extension – is a player reportedly unhappy with his role in Columbus and could be available by trade: Russian attacker Yegor Chinakhov.
Speculation is that Chinakov has the oilers on a short list of teams he would like Accept a course Unpleasant. According to @FinnntasticstatsChinakhov, 24 years old, has a sloping $ 2.1 million deal and has completed trade requirements. The Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers are already in the talking phases with Columbus.
Is Chinakov the type of player that McDavid is looking for?
Chinakhov is only two seasons away from a campaign of 16 goals and 29-point campaign in 2023–24, with an average of 15:10 ice age over 53 games. He is still a bit unproven, but with only 175 career -NHL games under his belt he has made a strong impression with 34 total goals and seems to have the skills that is a dynamic scorer in the NHL.
As a line with one of McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, Chinakov can be a 30 -way man.
Former head coach Pascal Vincent said about the winger: “Yes, he can shoot the puck. He is a powerful skater; he is strong on the puck. But his greatest quality … is his hockey feeling. His brain is a computer. He is really reading quickly, and he is much more reliable defensive than people think.”
For the oils, the combination of Chinakhov makes him an intriguing prospect of offensive and defensive responsibility. And his timeline corresponds to Edmonton’s in terms of progression and lifespan. As the most important low players of the oilers get older, Chinakov would flower in his flowering for the next three to five seasons. He is the kind of player that the oilers want, because some older scorers make way for the new blood that McDavid wants to know is because of the system.
Chinakov is a cost -oriented player
If an exchange comes together, Edmonton could use this season to see where Chiankov is and what he can bring. As a limited free agent there is some cost control that is important for Edmonton. If he plays well, the oilers can make a strategic offer, or sign him in the long term and betting on his potential, or bridge him to adapt to which deal McDavid sign.
This is not certain, so there is some risk related to making such a move. So also, Columbus will not give the player away, despite how unhappy he seems to be at the organization.
All of this, for the oilers, a team that is competitive while integrating younger talent, Chinakhov represents exactly the type of attacker that can excite both management and the captain who is only looking for a reason to sign his extension.
