Have you noticed that a growing number of modern car parts consists of plastic? Your grandfather doesn’t lie when he says they don’t make them like before. The plastic content in cars increased by 16% from 2012 to 2021, according to a report of 2023 by the American Chemistry Council. That means that almost 411 pounds of the weight of a modern vehicle are plastic. Although this is on average about 10% of the total weight of a car, this is also good for almost 50% of the total volume of the vehicle. So the term “plastic fantastic” is logical when describing a contemporary car.

Yet car manufacturers have not only switched to plastic parts for fun, and the type of this material used in cars is not the same as the material used for water bottles. Instead, these pans often consist of a fiber-reinforced polyamide resin that weighs much less than the usual choice of cast aluminum.

The benefits of plastic oils pans

In a world of ever -radiant emission standards, car manufacturers use plastic to make vehicles lighter and more economical. A lighter car means that the engine can burn less fuel to move the vehicle, which in turn reduces emissions and at the same time improves the fuel consumption of your car. That is why the engine room of a typical car is a colossal mess of plastic parts.

The Peugeot 508 was one of the first cars to use a plastic oil pan, which was developed by the Singapore -based company DSM Engineering Plastics. The new Carter was 60% lighter than the original metal pan, not to mention much cheaper to make. Yet weight reduction is only a small part of the reason why plastic finds its way to our journeys. It is much easier to integrate other car parts, such as the oil drain plug, sensors, fixing points and clips, in the resin material that is used to make these pans. In addition, plastic oil tiles are resistant to stone and gravel effects and their very flexible casting helps to reduce the engine noise, vibrations and hardness. In general, switching to plastic pans is a win-win situation for both car manufacturers and owners. Yet the Swap has a few disadvantages that are worth mentioning.

The disadvantages of plastic oils pans

The entire car industry has an understandable love for plastic, but specific cars are not a desirable match for a polyamidan. For example, plastic pans are not the best choice for racing vehicles. Of course a lighter car can find its way faster, but cast aluminum alloy dissipates heat better than plastic, which means that it offers better engine performance than pans made of polyamide. In addition, formed plastic tends to insulate and retain more heat, and it can melt or curve when constantly exposed to heat weeks – even if your radiator fan remains.

If you decide to choose a car with a plastic oil pan, know that you don’t have to replace the entire plastic oil pan when you give your car an oil change. (Unless the crankcase leaks or has visible cracks). It also helps to be conscientious when screwing the drain plug of a plastic oil pan back on during an oil change, because covered damage or oil leaks can cause. I think it’s great or hate it, plastics in cars will occur more often with the progress of technologies in polyamide resins. Whether this is a good or bad thing is under discussion.
