Instead of asking, “How far can I go?” the B student asks, “What is best for my healing today?” Healing of mind, body and soul. And from a yoga lens, this kind of healing is not seen as three separate things being ‘fixed’, but as the restoration of harmony (yoga=union) between all levels of our human existence. Yoga views our healing as remembering our wholeness, rather than us being someone who needs to be healed or fixed.
Asking ourselves what is best for our healing today speaks to the reality that our bodies are always changing. Energy fluctuates. Stress, sleep, emotions and life circumstances all influence how we move and breathe. A sustainable practice (for me) ultimately means making room for this kind of truth.
There is also a profound wisdom in the nervous system if you are a B student. Constant striving activates stress responses: tight jaw, shallow breathing, stiffening muscles. When we allow ourselves to step back a little and choose moderation over intensity, the body can transition toward self-regulation and recovery. This is often where real transformation happens.
Ironically, many people find that their practice deepens when they stop trying to be A students. Strength develops more organically. Flexibility increases without strength. Awareness becomes sharper. Yoga is less about self-improvement and more about self-relationship.
Perhaps most importantly: the mentality of the B student does not remain on the mat. It follows us in life beyond the mat. What I feel is kind of the point. We also become more patient with ourselves. Less reactive when things don’t go according to plan. More willing to pause, listen, and respond rather than persevere at all costs. And if we have a habit around this, we are more likely to be this way with the people around us.
In a culture that still rewards overachievement and burnout, choosing to become a B student is a quiet act of wisdom. It says: I’m paying attention. I practice with care. I’m here to learn, not prove.
And that may be the most advanced practice of all.
