Vandi Verma (born in Punjab, India) was the head of NASA who made the breakthrough of autonomous propulsion on the Perseverance rover on Mars in December 2025, the first autonomous propulsion that works without any direct human interaction.
In her work, Mars 2020 is described as the first mission to think independently through rovers, and that is only possible because she is the chief engineer.
Vandi Verma: Early Life and Education
Verma was born into the family of an Indian Air Force pilot and a teacher near Halwara Air Force Station and was inspired by the world of science and aviation.
She obtained a B.Tech in Electronics from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, followed by MS and PhD degrees in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University (2005) with a thesis on Tractable Particle Filters of robot Fault Diagnosis.
How Vandi Verma entered NASA?
Verma joined NASA Ames Research Center as an intern where he tested Mars rovers in Chile in the Atacama Desert and created PLEXIL (Plan Execution Interchange Language).
Later in 2007, she joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), where she assisted Opportunity and Spirit rovers on a record-breaking mission to Endurance Crater.
What was her role in Uber Systems’ Ingenuity operations?
As Chief Robotic Operations Engineer on the Mars 2020 Perseverance mission, Verma managed broader interactions between the rover and helicopter, such as the April 2021 deployment of Ingenuity by Perseverance and the 72 flight technologyy demonstration of ingenuity through 2024.
Her autonomy experience was used to help Ingenuity explore Perseverance airborne routes into Jezero Crater, but overall leadership was provided by MiMi Aung’s team at JPL.
The autonomy frameworks developed by Verma (such as PLEXIL, created as an Ames intern, and MEXEC multi-mission planning) were implemented in Perseverance systems that sent flight data and imagery created by Ingenuity to Earth.
These instruments ensured smooth coordination of the rover and helicopter even without constant human control, aiding Ingenuity’s independent navigation via onboard cameras and sensors.
Perseverance rover’s priorities do not attribute any individual Ingenuity-exclusive projects to it.
Vandi Verma’s Key Contributions at NASA
Verma made advances in rover autonomy AutoNav (terrain avoidance), AEGIS (AI geology focused on Curiosity) and SSIM (surface simulation on Perseverance).
She integrated vision language models from the Perseverance arm so that the sample can be collected without commands from Earth.
Mars Sample Return and Dragonfly are based on the innovations of Verma who collaborates with CMU to create resistant AI. Her role is motivating the world of STEM, a mix of Indian ingenuity and NASA missions.
Vandi Verma’s journey across Punjab to Mars makes her a pioneer in robotics, the AI frontier for human space expansion.
