Chicago wasn’t expected to be a major player in free agency, and Getz’s comments confirm the club will continue to make do with veterans signing short deals with their young players. In his two seasons at the helm, Getz has handed out just one multi-year deal

to a two-year, $15 million pact in 2024. Getz’s biggest offseason investment was a one-year, $5 million deal

. The contract included a $10 million mutual option for 2026, which Perez declined. Getz will have to replace Perez and his companions

all of whom made double-digit starts for Chicago this past year. If Chicago goes the free agent route, the reinforcements will likely be one-year in nature.

Most of all, we want to strengthen our coaching staff, improve our processes within the front office and go out and try to win as many games as we can. years,” Getz said. “That’s something we have control over, and in the coming years, as we approach that ’27 season, we will adapt and build the best club for the future that we can after the ’26 season.
Getz has already made progress on the coaching staff. The White Sox announced this week that Derek Shomon will take over as hitting coach, and Sherman Johnson Jr. will take over. will join the organization as minor league hitting coordinator.
Shomon was most recently an assistant hitting coach with the Marlins, overseeing Miami’s improvement from 27th in runs in 2024 to 16th in 2025. Prior to his lone year with the Fish, Shomon was an assistant hitting coach with the Twins in 2023-24, and Minnesota finished 10th in the league in runs during each of those seasons. Johnson comes to Chicago after three seasons in Baltimore, where he first worked in the Orioles’ minor league in 2023-2024 before being promoted to assistant coach on the big league staff last season.

Chicago had the third-lowest OPS and fourth-lowest wRC+ as a team last season, but did get some promising contributions from some young hitters. Top prospect Colson Montgomery debuted in July and delivered strong power numbers, with 21 home runs in just 71 games. The Garrett hook trade paid immediate dividends, such as Kyle Teel posted a 125 wRC+ and Chase MeiiThoth offered decent production at the top of the order with a .329 OBP. The White Sox even managed to have a league-average season Miguel Vargas. The former top prospect arrived in 2024 as part of the Michael Kopech trade. He struggled to finish that season, but rebounded to hit a respectable .234/.316/.401 in his first full year with the team.
