Griffin Canning reportedly has options as he attempts to make a comeback from a devastating injury.
The right-handed pitcher, who spent the 2025 season with the Mets, has received interest from several teams, including the White Sox, according to The Athletic.
Canning, 29, suffered a torn Achilles tendon after falling to the ground in discomfort during the Mets’ June 26 game against the Braves at Citi Field.
He was helped off the field by the Mets training staff and skipper Carlos Mendoza, who later said Canning’s recovery would take at least nine months.
After undergoing season-ending surgery, Canning said he would investigate the injury and contact several NBA players, including Klay Thompson and Jayson Tatum, about the recovery process.
“It sucks. Obviously I want and wanted to be with the guys, but I just love baseball, so I think that’s probably the worst part, I just can’t play for a while,” Canning said. “I think I’m going to do some research and read about all the basketball players and stuff that have had this, so yeah, figure out what to do.”
Before the injury, Canning was in the midst of perhaps his best long run in the majors.

After sixteen starts, Canning had a 7-3 record with a 3.77 ERA, blown up by a few rough outings in early June.
After adjusting his pitch mix on the advice of the Mets staff, he managed to keep the ball on the ground, with a career groundball percentage of 50.9, according to FanGraphs.
“It just shows their confidence in their ability to develop guys and they feel like they can bring them in and say the right things,” Canning told reporters about his time with the Mets. “The organization as a whole is confident in the information they can give the boys and help them get the right information.”
Before joining the Mets, Canning spent six years on and off with the Angels, showing flashes of potential while also missing all of 2022 due to a nagging back injury.
He was traded to the Braves last offseason, but was non-tendered shortly after before signing with the Mets.
In 115 career games spanning six seasons, Canning owns an ERA of 4.65.
The Athletic noted that the White Sox expressed interest in Canning in December, which proved to be a busy month for the organization.
Chicago signed Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami, added veteran pitchers Sean Newcomb and Anthony Kay and took a flier on former prized Mets prospect Jarred Kelenic.
White Sox manager Will Venable told reporters on Wednesday that Newcomb, who has primarily served as a reliever in recent seasons, would compete for a spot in the rotation. Kay also spent most of his career as a starter in recent seasons, including in Japan.
A healthy Canning, if he can replicate his Mets success, would provide teams with solid middle-of-the-rotation depth.
