Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker took Swipes to the government of President Donald Trump while promoting vaccinations in childhood this week.
His appearance at the Wheeling Township Elementary School District 21 Community Service Center coincided with the National Immunization Month and the start of the 2025-26 school year.
Pritzker and health officials spoke about the benefits of vaccinations and the dangers of not being vaccinated, as well as how vaccination efforts in Illinois prevented an outbreak of measles spread earlier this year.
Pritzker notes that a new school year is about to start and said: “Some of our leaders in Washington also have to go back to school to inform themselves about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.”
“A cabinet secretary or two” can benefit from the information, he added.
The comment was probably a shot with the American health and human service secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a distinct anti-vaccinactivist who has reduced federal financing for vaccine research and related projects.
Pritzker continued to say that vaccines are administered after years of research, and insisted that their safety is being followed.
“We trust science and we take care of each other in this state,” said Pritzker. “That is the Illinois way.”
Other speakers during the press conference were Dr. Sameer Vohra, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. The hesitation of vaccine is growing, he said, and national policy efforts have confused people about the issue.
“Vaccines save lives,” he said.
Vohra also emphasized the importance of children who have medical examinations and routine physics back-to-school.
Illinois State Schools Superintendent Tony Sanders noted that vaccines do more than keep children healthy.
“They keep them at school,” he said.
Students cannot succeed “if they miss the school due to illness,” Sanders added.
