What is old is new again. Retro-name pictures with new styling started to come back to the market a few years ago, with vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, Renault 5 and Fiat 500E who pick up the mantle of decades old name plates and bring them to the 21st century. While car manufacturers tried to generate Retro class in the past decade with offers such as 2002 Ford Thunderbird and the PT Cruiser 2010, this time it seems to celebrate that more retro vehicles actually work.
The Bronco is a hit for Ford, the Nissan Z is a nice Zippy car that is actually affordable, and the Chevy Blazer, it remains. But I think we, and with us, I mean Jalopnik, can do better. So I ask the question; Which car do you think it deserves to be brought back from the pages of history?
My choice: The Ford Ranchero
I recently walked past Woodward (the piece in the actual city where they don’t hold the Woodward Dream Cruise) and I saw a rare face, even in the land of Detroit Steel: a bright yellow old Ford Thunderbird from 2002. Was this a good car? That depends on what kind of car drives on your boat and/or tickles your imagination. People back around the turn of the century at least enjoyed it in the beginning.
Our friends at Motorweek Gutten over the T-Bird, peppered in many flights and bird spots, which I will always appreciate. Motortrend even called the car of the year 2002. However, it was expensive; with an MSRP of $ 35,695 (an eyewrong $ 65,298 in today’s dollars) And what did you get that money? In short, a Lincoln LS -Sedan without a luxury interior. Yawn. Moreover, it came with a V8 that only released 280 hp, which turned out to be a bit too vintage for modern buyers.
Thunderbirds in the 50s and 60s were kick-ass cars. I loved them when I was a child, but now I am older, more mature and there is another Ford -based Ford who puts my heart every time: the small, Zippy and Bright Valk. Now Ford cars made with the Falcon model name in Australia until 2016, so the idea is already a proven winner. The car was used by taxi services and in fleet sales and even as a ute, but there were also spicy versions for enthusiasts to enjoy. Enough time has passed since Ford has been closed under operations to bring the type plate home, I think.
Would Ford really roll the dice to bring sedans back to his line? Certainly not. That is why you do not return the actual Falcon; You bring it back as a real small, affordable truck like the Ranchero, something that can be just below the Maverick and can explain the popularity of that model (another vintage name plate again conceived for the new era.) Yes, Ford’s answer to the El Camino was actually Falcon based. Build it on the Universal EV platform of Ford and you would give that Lei startup a run for its money and at the same time offer a small, affordable truck to the masses.
