If you see a heavy-duty police motorcycle anywhere in the United States, chances are it’s from Harley-Davidson – and not by accident. Harley-Davidson has been supplying motorcycles to law enforcement agencies since 1908, and today that relationship continues with a small but highly specialized line designed and built specifically for police work. In modern fleets, the most commonly used Harley-Davidson police motorcycles are the Harley-Davidson Police Road Glide (not to be confused with the Street Glide), Harley-Davidson Police Road King and Harley-Davidson Police Electra Glide.

These are not civilian touring bikes retrofitted with lights and sirens. Harley-Davidson assembles them from the factory for police duties, with powerful electrical systems, emergency lighting and siren integration, police-specific seating and hardware designed to handle long downtimes and heavy equipment loads. The newest addition is the 2026 Police Road Glide. Equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight 121 VVT engine, it offers significantly more performance than previous police models and is manufactured with all hardware installed from the factory to reduce the need for dealer modifications and minimize downtime for departments.

The Road King and Electra Glide remain in service for agencies that prefer proven platforms with a long track record. All three of these models define Harley-Davidson’s current answer to police motorcycles.

What really sets the Police Road Glide 2026 apart is not just that it’s new, but how purposefully it was introduced to law enforcement. Well before the official release, Harley-Davidson began bringing officers onto the platform through training events, conferences and evaluation rides. Agents were already driving production Road Glides in controlled environments in 2023.

This allowed Harley-Davidson to build its Police Road Glide around the practical demands of patrol work. Visibility is impeccable, with emergency lights mounted on both the front and rear of the motorcycle, allowing officers to clearly signal in traffic or during roadside stops. The sound is managed via a special police siren system that gives officers direct commands from the handlebars and automatically switches off when the bike is parked.

The model is equipped with high-quality braking components designed to remain consistent through repeated use, which is critical in stop-and-go enforcement situations. The rear portion of the motorcycle doubles as a workspace, with a hard-mounted storage area that doubles as a power source for the onboard tools officers rely on during their shifts.

Riding comfort is enhanced via a height-adjustable solo seat that allows officers to adjust their driving position to reduce fatigue during long-hour shifts. In addition to performance and styling, the Police Road Glide emphasizes visibility, control and everyday usability in police work.

While the Police Road Glide represents the latest direction from Harley-Davidson, the Road King and Electra Glide – which, by the way, made our list of motorcycles with the longest production runs – continue to play an important role in law enforcement. The Police Road King is designed with a removable windshield, a single seat and saddlebags. It is equally suited to city patrols as it is to highway enforcement, and has been widely used by agencies around the world for decades.

The most recognizable police Harley ever built is the Police Electra Glide. The large frontal presence of a bat sleeve fairing and touring-oriented ergonomics made it the standard choice for many departments in the 2000s and 2010s. It offers the rider comfort, stability at speed and predictable handling under heavy loads, taking into account the very long hours in the saddle. Integrated emergency lighting, linked Brembo brakes and rider safety systems make it a reliable vehicle, unlike a modified cruiser.

Both motorcycles benefit from Harley-Davidson’s police-specific warranty programs and maintenance support. These motorcycles have become an important part of those agencies that value continuity, familiarity and established maintenance practices, even as newer platforms have emerged.
