When you forget your mobile phone in the taxi and miss the ferry home…

Writer: Helena Bergström

We would take the ferry from Poland to Sweden late in the evening, after our trip to Usedom. We had checked out of the hotel, taken a taxi across two countries, checked into the ferry and were about to board… when we discovered that both of our cell phones were missing. One could be located relatively quickly, the other could not. The gangplank was pulled away. What would we do? We decided not to jump on board…

Tired after many trips

We are probably tired after the many trips in the fall. At least that’s how we think. The trip to Usedom, Germany was relatively uneventful itself, but it was still a press trip, and once the last day was over, we perhaps started to relax… a little too much.

We had checked into Polferries when we discovered that both our cell phones were gone. How was that possible? Slightly panicking, we started looking around the terminal and after a while we discovered that my phone was at the check-in desk, but not Peter’s… Had he left it at the hotel, or in the taxi?

We made several attempts to call the taxi company but couldn’t get through. We realized that it would be very difficult to miss the ferry, but maybe it would yet harder to be without the cell phone. We had them pull the gangplank away and stayed in Poland…

What do we do now?

Now we were in Poland in the middle of the night, without Peter’s cell phone and with no plans for accommodation or return travel. We thought we had to go back to Heringsdorf, where we last stayed Steigenberger Grand Hotel & Spato find the phone.

The ferry terminal staff helped us book a taxi and we headed back across the border to Germany. We were at work and couldn’t think straight… so now I forgot my black fur hat in the terminal! How was that even possible…?

I forgot this black hat, in the stress, at the terminal…

Back in Germany…

When we arrived at the hotel in Germany and were about to pay for the taxi, it turned out that the taxi driver did not accept card payments. “Only in Poland” he said, but “now we are in Germany, so that’s not possible”… Now we had to take an extra taxi ride to find the nearest ATM in town. In any case, it worked and we were able to pay!

Since we checked out late in the evening, luckily our room was still booked for another night. They hadn’t had time to clean yet and we were welcome back to the room without extra payment. The staff was also very helpful, in every way!

Back at the Steigenberger Grand Hotel & Spa

The telephone then? It wasn’t in the room, not at reception, not in the bar… We looked up “Find My iPhone” on Peter’s computer and found it… just over a mile away. Time to go for a walk!

Night walk with the program “Find my iPhone” on the computer…

We walked for about 20 minutes in the pitch black night and finally we found the right “point”. We managed to get behind a gate and there it was… the taxi, with Peter’s cell phone in the backseat! We put a note on the door that said “My phone is in your car” as well as the name, phone number and name of the hotel. Then it was just a matter of going back and trying to get a few hours of sleep…

Walking through the night, looking for Peter’s cell phone.

Would we get the phone?

The next morning we woke up early, despite little sleep, and rushed to the reception to ask them to call the taxi company, keeping our eyes glued to the small phone icon in the “Find my iPhone” program. No answer, no answer, no answer… and then they answered!

Half an hour later the taxi driver came to the hotel and handed over the phone. Delicious! Now it was time to fix the rest…how were we going to get home?

While we were redecorating, we hung out at the reception of the Steigenberger Grand Hotel & Spa.

Now we had to fix the following: taxi, ferry, hotel, train…

Our travel blogger colleague Eva, van Backpack.sebooked a taxi from Heringsdorf to the ferry in Swinoujscie at 11:30 am. Perfect, then we could go with her! It was the same driver now, and he checked us carefully: Do you have everything with you now…? Nothing left in the car?

We also booked another ferry trip, this time with Unity Line, and without a car it cost no more than about SEK500 for both of us to take the ferry, so it was a manageable extra cost. And what happened when we arrived at the terminal…? Well, there was my black hat waiting!

But now we would arrive in Ystad in the evening, instead of in the morning, and we would miss our train… We booked a hotel night at Ystad Station, where we lived before. Fun, flexible and reasonable price.

Accommodation at Ystad station

The train then? Rebooking was even possible! We received new train tickets for the next day, without paying anything extra. A little later than planned, but we are now on our way to Stockholm… and both mobile phone and hat are included!

How was it on Usedom? Very nice! But that’s another story, which we’ll tell one day. Have you ever lost something important somewhere during a trip?
