When the Universe Challenges You: How to Respond Calmly to Life’s Problems | Meaningful money

❝When we can no longer change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.❞
-Viktor Frankl

Life doesn’t ask you if it’s fair; you are asked how you will respond.

WHEN SOMETHING LITTLE DESTROYS YOUR DAY

I’m walking my dog when I get an email from a popular media site that published one of my guest articles the day before.

To my surprise, the next day they published a piece by someone who regularly plagiarizes my work. It’s too close to be random.

And just like that, my peaceful walk is gone. My head spins stories: it’s not fair, how could they do this? Why does this keep happening?

Then I remembered a reframe that has helped me more than once: Every time I’m presented with a challenge, I can choose to see it as a test from the universe. It sounds a bit dramatic. But it works.

Instead of responding, I pause. Instead of steaming, I get curious. Instead of spiraling, I ask: What does this ask of me?

It doesn’t magically solve the situation. But it changes my relationship with it. When I have something under control, I can take action. If not, I can let it go.

Anyway, I remain calmer. And that alone makes troubleshooting easier.

WHY DIFFICULTY IS NORMAL

It is tempting to believe that the purpose of life is to eliminate problems.

We imagine that once we get through this phase – once work settles down, once the kids are older, once we retire – things will finally run smoothly.

We may even find ourselves waiting for a future in which the problems will eventually be reduced to zero.

But no matter where we are in life, there will always be something to solve.

Problems are not interruptions in life. They are part of life.

LIFE IS A CONSTANT SERIES OF PROBLEMS

Sometimes it feels like we’re on a treadmill, solving one problem after another, hoping that one day we can get off and just “live.”

But as an author and philosopher Sam Harris points out that life is an endless series of complications.

That may sound like pessimism, but it is realism. Having to solve problems is a universal human condition. If you’re still alive, you’re dealing with complications.

When we expect a smooth path, every new problem feels like an insult. When we expect friction, it no longer feels personal.

Sketch that shows problem solving as a universal human condition, and not as a personal failure.

ANOTHER WAY TO SEE CHALLENGES: THE ‘TEST’ REFRAME

This is what usually happens: as problems grow, our emotional response grows with them.

That is the default setting. Automatic. Subconscious.

But there is another option. When you discover a problem, you may wonder: what if this is a test?

No punishment. No proof that you’re failing. Just a challenge that demands something from you.

That simple shift changes the curve.

The problem may still be there. But the emotional peak softens. Smaller problems disappear quickly. Bigger ones turn into puzzles instead of threats.

You are no longer fighting reality; you respond to it.

CHOOSING YOUR RESPONSE WHEN LIFE DOESN’T FEEL FAIR

Seeing life as a series of tests on the universe may sound a bit abstract. But the real point is not about the universe. It’s about perspective.

You cannot choose whether problems arise. You can choose how you meet them.

When you stop expecting life to be frictionless, you are no longer surprised by normal difficulties. And when you reframe challenges as a test of your fortitude, creativity, or patience, something changes. The problem doesn’t shrink, but your response does… and that’s often enough.

You get one life; live consciously.
