In the end it was Volkanovski who won again by decision in a rather entertaining fight. After UFC 325, this is what I think should be the next step for the two fighters involved in the title fight.
Alexander Volkanovsky
Alexander Volkanovski remained the UFC featherweight champion with a decisive victory over Diego Lopes. Volkanovski was able to dictate the pace and avoid Lopes’ powerful punches. The Australian also used his wrestling to control the fight and earn the victory.
Many went into the fight wondering if Volkanovski would retire even if he won. Still, he made it clear after the fight that he won’t retire and that he still has more fights in him.
“I mean, if it’s the featherweight division, it’s got to be the top guys,” Volkanovski said on the post-fight show. “You know how I am. I want to fight the top guys who deserve it. … I’ll talk to the UFC and see what they say. But for me, at the end of the day, I’m an easy champion. If the UFC pushes it or whatever, fine. We’ll see what happens.”
Lerone Murphy and Movsar Evloev will headline UFC London on March 21, and the winner of that fight should be Volkanovski’s next opponent sometime this summer.
Diego Lopes
Diego Lopes is now 0-2 against Volkanovski and he will not get a title opportunity for a while. Lopes had some moments in the fight, but he did break both feet during the fight, which likely hindered his performance.
Lopes should take some time off to recover and return in the third or fourth quarter of this year. If he returns, a logical next fight would be against someone like Arnold Allen or Youssef Zalal, because he will need it. fight under him to defend his place.
