What’s going on with JD Vance’s motorcade? – Jalopnik

Being assigned to help protect the Vice President of the United States should be an honor. They may not be the president, but they are still next in line to hold the most powerful position in the world. That honor doesn’t just extend to the Secret Service agents in VP security, either, as they often ask local law enforcement to help with things like motorcade security. But recently, Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade has twice found itself in some weird but dangerous situations that have left us with several questions – namely, what the heck is going on with JD Vance’s motorcade?

The Washington Post reports this that on Friday evening, a Maryville, Tennessee, police officer who was escorting Vance’s motorcade to a Republican National Committee fundraiser was involved in a crash with a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper. Details about the crash are still scarce, but we do know that the officer was riding a motorcycle at the time of the crash. Initially, authorities chose not to release the officer’s name or condition, but Tennessee’s 6News is reporting it now the officer in question is Maryville Police Officer FTO Justin Brown. They also report that Brown is in critical condition as a result of the crash, although he is reportedly “making minor improvements.”

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp also told reporters that Brown is dealing with significant injuries and that doctors do not expect him to be released anytime soon. According to Crisp, “It is expected that his progress will be gradual and that he will remain in the hospital for an extended period of time, but we are grateful for the improvement we have seen since Friday.” It’s still unclear what led to state police hitting Brown’s motorcycle, but fortunately, emergency responders in an ambulance traveling with the motorcade were able to quickly respond to the crash and render aid.

A strange coincidence

Friday night’s crash also comes less than a month after Vance’s motorcade was involved in a separate incident, this time in California. Vance was in California to watch the military fire munitions over California’s Interstate 5, an objectively stupid idea that was destined to end badly, even though no one expected it to hit the vice president’s motorcade. However, when a 155-millimeter artillery shell exploded prematurely, it rained shrapnel onto the ground below, peppering several cars with pieces of metal that an officer told the BBC “It sounded like pebbles were raining on his patrol bike.”

There is no reason to believe the two incidents are in any way related, and even less evidence supports the idea that someone targeted Vance. That said, it’s still a bit concerning that something has happened to the vice president’s security staff twice in less than a month. Also, you can’t really call it a pattern until something happens for the third time, so for now it’s probably more of a coincidence than anything else. But is it a sign that something is going on behind the scenes at the Secret Service?

They had that problem where the Beast’s trunk opened recently, which they blame on a mechanical failure. But shouldn’t the president’s limousine be checked regularly enough so that mechanical failure isn’t a problem? There’s probably nothing going on, and it’s all just a series of coincidences, but it’s still strange, right? I certainly don’t remember that many incidents during the Biden administration. On the other hand, the Biden administration also didn’t insist on firing live ammunition across a highway, so at least some of this is self-inflicted. Still, I’m left with the original question: What the heck is going on with JD Vance’s motorcade?
