Welcome to GOLF’s Top 100 Teacher roundtable discussion, where some of the best instructors in the industry answer the game’s most pressing questions. The goal? To help your game and lower your scores as quickly as possible.
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow – and that means we have at least six more weeks of winter. It’s a shame that our furry forecaster has extended our winter blues, but on the other hand, it leaves a lot more time for off-season practice.
The offseason isn’t the best time of year for a golfer, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be productive. In fact, if you know what you need to work on, you can come out of the winter a much more complete golfer than ever before.
So, what should you practice during the offseason? Below, a group discusses GOLF Top 100 teachers.
1. Speed training
The best area to focus on this offseason is swing speed. It doesn’t matter where the ball goes in the winter, so forget about technique and build up your swing speed. You will thank yourself in the summer. —Jason Birnbaum
2. Distance control with wedges
If you have access to a simulator, work on your distance control on wedge shots. Indoor wedge drills with a simulator that provides feedback are a great way to get your distance wedge shots dialed in once the snow melts. You can get an idea of your swing speed in relation to carry distance, which is a great way to practice shots from 30 to 100 yards. —Tim Cooke
3. Make swing changes
Practice the shape and motor patterns you want to change. Without the pressure or expectation of hitting a ball, the offseason is perfect for working on new patterns and new feelings and integrating them into your nervous system and memory. —Dr. Alison Curdt
4. Find the center of the face
Practicing indoors? Use face spray on the clubface and make sure every swing has one thing in mind: finding the center. Don’t chase the ball flight or speed, chase the shot. When you can consistently find the center plane, distance stabilizes, starting lines improve, and accidents decrease. Own the shot and everything else in the swing becomes quieter. —Mark Durland
