Welcome to Scorpio, our eighth sign of the zodiac. Scorpio, an archetype of depth and power, regeneration and alchemy, brings profound medicine for each of us to work with. It heightens our intuition, sensitizes us to the mystery inherent in life, and ignites passion, focus, and profound inner strength.
As we experience Scorpio season each year, we meet the Scorpio within ourselves. No matter when you were born and whatever your sun sign, you hold the essence of Scorpio within you. For some, Scorpio is easily felt, expressed and identified in thoughts and actions. For others it is more quietly beneath the surface, subtle and in the background.
Scorpio dates
Those born between October 22 and November 21 are born under the zodiac sign of Scorpio, making this sign their sun sign.
What is the element of a Scorpio?
Scorpio is our second water sign. In astrology, water is emotion, intuition and the invisible realms associated with emotions and energies. It embodies connection and the ability to merge, like the feeling of going beyond the boundaries of the self.
Our first water sign, Cancer, protects and nourishes emotional life. Our last water sign, Pisces, merges with the waters of unity. Scorpio bridges these signs and brings with it the emotional capacity essential for transformation, power and truth.
Scorpio personality
The Scorpio archetype navigates the emotion we all experience with relative ease. Scorpio sees what others can’t, feels what others don’t see, and unravels what insights others may not have access to. It feels, sees and penetrates what exists beyond the surface.
Scorpio wants to take us inside. It draws us to the invisible aspects of ourselves and life around us. It asks us to reclaim what is real within us, what is lasting, and what internal strength and security look and feel like. It removes everything that is not authentic and returns us to what is. It invites us to know our power as we navigate the mystery and unknown in life.
We may struggle with the lower possibilities of the Scorpio archetype as we learn to hold its depth. These lower expressions of Scorpio can resemble emotional extremes: obsession, control, secrecy, and controlling vulnerability focused on self and others.
Here we can confuse intensity with intimacy or protection with power. Scorpio means learning how to live in the world with such sensitivity. It is a sign that feels everything and therefore has learned to build armor to survive. Beneath this armor is often a brutal fear of loss, betrayal, the fear of being seen too deeply and then abandoned.
Yet it is precisely this sensitivity that can become Scorpio’s strength. When we begin to work with the immense gifts of this sign, we essentially learn how to stay present without armor. We choose to keep ourselves open to life, to allow emotions to move rather than harden, to allow ourselves to feel rather than control. We remember that vulnerability is a source of strength, and that surrender does not have to be seen as a loss of power – rather, it is the attunement to a greater force – the rhythm of the currents of life.
Working with the medicinal offerings of this sign means trusting the cyclical nature of life – endings that blossom into beginnings, death into rebirth, closure into opening, and surrender into regeneration.
Scorpio thrives when immersed in experiences that offer depth, truth, transformation, and space to see beyond the surface. It wants to channel its enormous energy into investigating and unraveling mysteries.
This sign wants to come fully alive. It wants to feel the pulse of life that moves in all things – the threads of creation and destruction and the continuation of those cycles in all life. It needs depth and feeling. It wants to merge.
And in its highest expression, Scorpio needs intimacy – the kind that strips away pretense and reveals the essence of all things, moments and people.
Scorpio also explores themes related to power in this life. It explores power as control so that it can evolve into power as a sacrifice to all life. This exploration is Scorpio’s greatest teacher. Although not always an easy teacher, Scorpio comes alive when fully immersed in it.
Which planet rules Scorpio?
Traditionally, Scorpio is ruled by Mars. In astrology, Mars represents vitality and life force. Aries, also ruled by Mars, expresses the energy of this planet outwardly in drive and assertiveness. Scorpio alchemizes the planet’s more inward-looking qualities, namely intensity, focus, magnetism, and the power to face what others may turn away from. Think of Scorpio as an inward-looking willpower.
However, when Pluto was discovered in 1930, it was considered the modern ruler of Scorpio, revealing a greater essence to this sign. Pluto rules death and regeneration. It teaches us how to wield power, reveal the truth, and change ourselves by surrendering control.
Traditional astrologers may lean toward Mars as the ruler of the sign, just as modern astrologers tend to resonate more deeply with Pluto. But when we put these identities together, we get to see a deeper arc in Scorpio’s development, and our collective and individual relationship with its themes. While Mars provides raw energy, Pluto converts that energy into creative power. Mars gives Scorpio the courage to enter the underworld, Pluto offers him the wisdom to be reborn from it.
What modality is Scorpio?
Scorpio is a fixed sign in astrology.
This steady nature gives Scorpio strength, determination, and laser focus. It increases the passion for what we claim, clenches the hands and does not let go until what were once visions becomes reality. It reminds us that if we remain committed and take active steps on whatever path calls our name, we are completely reborn in the process.
However, because Scorpio is fixed water, its essence does not flow freely like a river (like mutable Pisces) or protectively like a tide pool (think Cardinal Cancer). Instead, it’s still water. It’s the depths of the ocean. An underground lake.
This silence creates an intensity as the pressure builds from beneath the surface. This means that the sign feels and holds emotions with a profound depth, a depth that becomes alchemical. While others may avoid this intensity, Scorpio exists there, mastering themes of shadow work, intimacy, emotional truth, death, and rebirth.
Transformation itself is in a sense a constant, with every moment filled with both birth and death, reflecting the cyclical nature of life. As such, our existence requires constant surrender. Scorpio understands this.
The opposite sign of Scorpio
In astrology, each zodiac exists on an axis in conjunction with its opposite sign. These signs fall opposite each other along the same axis of the zodiac wheel and exist as partners, balancing each other and ensuring that each of them can be met in its fullness.
For Scorpio, this partner is Taurus. These signs are opposite sides of the same life force. Taurus represents form: the tangible body, the senses and the stable and reliable rhythm of life. Scorpio represents the process: the dissolution of form, the invisible, the regenerative flow that causes all life to renew itself. Together they reflect the mystery of creation: the cycles of life, death and rebirth that sustain everything.
While Taurus offers stability, Scorpio reminds us that everything must transform. They offer each other and us a mirror, showing how life experience requires us to be both rooted and fluid, embodied and evolving, grounded and open to mystery.
For those with a lot of Scorpio in their birth chart, leaning into Taurus offers the grounded security of the body, the joy of life, and the stability that allows water to flow. It reminds Scorpio that transformation can be safe, peaceful, simple, embodied, and even enjoyable. Taurus is the medicine for Scorpio.
Scorpio symbol
The symbol of Scorpio reflects an “M” with a tail that extends outward and curves upward into an arrow. This “M” is said to connect Scorpio with Virgo, perhaps because of their shared themes of purification and refinement. The tail with arrow points outwards and represents penetration, release and transformation, as does the tail of the Scorpion.
Traditionally, Scorpio is considered the scorpion. Yet it is also seen as reflective of not just one, but three emblems that represent a three-phase evolutionary arc. The Scorpion: instinctive, reactive and protective. Here we learn about survival and personal power. The Serpent – alchemical, intuitive and transformative. Here we understand how to move with change and transmute energy. And the final evolutionary stage of Scorpio is symbolized by the eagle or phoenix – the most transcendent form. Here we test the use of our power for creation rather than for survival or control. It has risen above emotional entanglement and can see the truth from a higher perspective.
The scorpion, the snake and the eagle or phoenix each reflect an intensification of consciousness that Scorpio continually invites us into. From power through control, to power through consciousness, to power through surrender and vision. This symbolism represents Scorpio’s connection to constant transformation through the cycles, death and rebirth.
