It all started so innocently: you put around the garage on a fresh autumn morning – check for harmful low tire pressure and things like that – if you notice that the coolant tank of your car is low. Well, there is that partial gallon pre -mixed items that you are pretty sure is compatible with your current ride, so you dump the rest of the plastic in the plastic reservoir of your car. Now the level is about to overflow the cap, will certainly turn into an antifriestevivalent of Mount St. Helens as soon as the engine actually starts to get hot.
Fortunately in this case you can place the proverbial toothpaste back in the tube. For the mechanical sloping, most radiators have a petcock valve on the bottom that you can open – often by hand, without tools – to drain part of the surplus coolant (a mix of antifreeze and water) in a pan or bucket. It will not immediately appear that the level in the plastic tank goes down. However, the excess coolant in the tank will eventually be sucked into the radiator to replace the amount that has been removed, so that the correct level in the plastic tank is restored. But if you want to cut the middle man and remove liquid directly from the coolant tank tank, that is also an option.
Don’t leave any puddle on the floor
Together with selling snacks, car -parts stores and hardware stores sell all kinds of gadgets to pump or extract liquid, but nobody has time (or money) for that. Instead, you can claim the turkey baster of your household to suck the excess coolant of the plastic reservoir. However, antifreeze is toxic, so make sure you buy the baster or, better yet, before you host the Thanksgiving evening meal of this year. Pro -tip: You can buy a new one in your local dollar shop. You can also insert a short length of tubes in a pinch and then keep your thumb at the top like an improvised pipette.
However, you choose to relieve your vehicle of your overcrowded errors of coolants, use carefully to store or throw away the removed liquid. As mentioned earlier, antifreeze is toxic and it is known that pets get seriously ill after storing, so make sure that does not happen. Recycle the liquid or save it in a secure container. If coolant spill on the ground, you must wipe it immediately.
Use the correct coolant
To prevent you from adding too much coolant to your vehicle in the future, pay attention to the markings that are present on the side of the coolant. Also note that some overflow reservoirs have a dipstick instead. It is okay to check and add coolant to a hot engine, but you want to prevent you from removing the cap from the reservoir when the engine is hot. Otherwise, burning hot liquid and vapor can escape.
The coolant tank must have at least “full” and “low” fluid level indicators printed on the side. Sometimes these indicators also become “hot” and “cold” instead of or next to full and low. Ideally, the coolant level must be on the coolant or dipstick between the high and low figures. If you constantly have to supplement the coolant reservoir, it may indicate a greater problem, such as a leak in the cooling system or white smoke that a defective head gasket can indicate.
Finally, not all coolant was drawn up. A coolant is ready to go directly from the container. However, you can also buy pure antifreeze that must be mixed with distilled water in a correct ratio, so watch. Some engines also require a very specific type of coolant, which is sometimes identified by the color.
