Startup shaft company Aretera started making a name for itself with its first two shaft offerings, the EC1 and Alpha 1.
But its latest product, the AO2, is potentially the line that could help the company really break through on the PGA Tour.
On GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-host Johnny Wunder brought company co-founders Alex Dee and Chris Elson to discuss the new AO2 and why they expect it to be a shaft that will “apply very well to the PGA Tour.”
“It’s a general profile type, more active in the handle versus, you know, firmer in the middle and tip section, which historically has been quite popular on tour,” Elson said. “We’re incorporating power grid material, as well as our coreless design, which is a carryover from EC1, to also improve tourism stability. So it’s hopefully an even more innovative, performance-based product than a lot of those other shafts out there with a similar profile.”

AO2 is in a class of its own with intelligent design, refined craftsmanship and meticulous manufacturing. Active in the handle and solid center to the tip, the AO2 translates first-class technique into stroke repeatability. We understand how challenging it can be to navigate a multitude of variables between swing dynamics and shaft profiles in play. That’s why we strategically designed ONLY ONE difference between the blue and gray profiles – the tip stiffness – to simplify the process and dial in the spin and launch to suit the player’s swing type.

While this is a shaft that could do very well for a typical PGA Tour player, one of the things that made the EC1 popular is that it suits golfers of all levels.
Elson expects golfers of all speeds to suit AO2 as well.
“It’s not just a shaft profile that performs well for people who have a cruise speed of 122. That’s why we also make it in a 45-gram version because we look at that profile type and we tend to look at the combination of shaft profiles with swing types,” he said. “And we tend to see people who have such a late release, a little bit aggressive at the bottom of their swing, who hold the angle type of player and are someone who typically does very well with this type of profile. That swing type doesn’t necessarily have to be someone who, again, crosses at 122. You could have someone who’s a little bit older, maybe a little bit more, a little bit shorter swing, a quicker transition, who still holds the angle.”
