San Francisco – If it goes like John Daly and talks like John Daly, is it John Daly? Not necessary. It can be John Daly II.

The son of the dual big winner is this week in San Francisco, where he goes well on the US Amateur Championship. After playing through a stroke and in the round of 64, the younger Daly defeated his buddy, Cooper Claycomb of Bowling Green, Ky., 1 in his opening match in the Olympic club on Wednesday. He did this with a combination of wonderful driving and dead eyes that made his old man think in his bloom.

“I felt that I was doing well,” said Daly II. “I made some good puts and kept it in the game.”

Such as his father, Daly, 21, plays collegial wave in his home at the University of Arkansas. Just like the older Daly far back when he has a sturdy build and baby caterpillar that grows on his upper lip.

But the men are not copies of each other. Even if the apple is not far from the tree, it is not difficult to tell the two apart. For example, Daly II has a compact backswing, no single scale, and while he digs the long ball, he says that his grip-and-off-it-it-it-set is not due to his DNA.

“I feel that that’s exactly what you have to do today,” he said. “Everyone has been struck so far.”

Other golf -related lessons come directly from his father. Take this tip about dealing with pressure. “Just fun. If you just let yourself have fun, the nerves will disappear.” Or the remedy when you go wrong chipping. “Just hit a bunch of chips left -handed.”

There are of course advantages to be the son of a famous Tour Pro, but also tiring disadvantages. Daly II understands that he cannot escape from comparisons. The same questions are asked repeatedly. When they were again on Wednesday, his answer had the ring of something that he has sounded many times before.

“He has two majors and I don’t,” he said. “I just try to be the best version of myself.”

That version itself has a few wins. One was at the PNC challenge of 2021 (OK, yes, he was linked to Daly Sr.). Another came to the southern amateur last month, which earned him a place in the Olympic club this week.

If he can stay unbeaten until the late day on Sunday (that is five games, if you keep the score at home), Daly II will brighten the biggest W of his young career.

But that’s not what he thought on Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m going to the dressing room and maybe go in the hot tub,” he said.

Before that, however, he intended to call his father.
