The 65-year-old Pearl in recent months has openly flirted with the idea of organizing a run in the political empire, made possible by Tommy Tuberville’s recent decision to leave his senate seat from Alabama to walk for Governor. This has been combined with posts shared with increasing frequency on Pearl’s own social media related to politics, the war in Gaza, his Jewish heritage and his support for President Donald Trump.
On Monday, Pearl settled those rumors about an imminent political run, at least for the time being, when announcing his retirement as a basketball coach. His son, Steven, will take over. The older Pearl will switch to the role of an ambassador in the athletic department as a special assistant to the athletic director. Bruce has a few months to change ideas; Alabama’s primary election for the Mid-Terms 2026 is May 19. Pearl would need a runway for at least a few months to settle as a legitimate political candidate, although he would be conceivable from enormous visibility in the state of Yellowhammer.

Political ambitions
Sources tell CBS Sports that Pearl was indeed considerably considering running for the open senate chair in Alabama, which he deliberately chose not to refute this summer. He had been, said sources, his plan was to hand over the keys to the Kingdom of Auburn to Steven.
A report from the Jewish insider earlier this month indicated that he spent the summer meeting with campaign agents and republicans who weigh a run on the senate seat, and that he gave himself until the end of September before he decided. At the time, the report said, he leaned against it. “

Pearl, perhaps intentionally, did not crush the idea of a political future in his announcement on Monday. He said instead that his new role will enable him to be ‘Auburn’s Senator’.
Why now?
With 42 days to the season opener, Auburn has almost no time to organize a national search if he even wanted to find a Pearl successor, not in the direct bloodline of the family. And as an associated head coach, the height of Steven is especially in view of the timing-a no-brainer.
The timing seems to be strategic for the older Pearl – a deadline for the Senate Run will soon come – to say nothing about the season that starts in less than two months. The hand of Auburn is forced. This is also not a unique move. Virginia coach Tony Bennett retired abruptly last October, so that the program was given no other choice than to elevate Ron Sanchez.
Former coach of Wisconsin, Bo Ryan, also abruptly retired in 2015 in a rare decision in the middle season. Thanks to the move, old ties assistant Greg Gard could take over.
At Auburn, this scheme makes the best of both worlds possible for all parties: Steven will take over and auburn of any tasks to find a successor, and Bruce stays close.
Pearl’s Legacy
Pearl steps down as the winning coach in the basketball history of Auburn with 232 victories. He led the program to two Final Fours (2019 and 2025), five SEC championships and six NCAA Tournament performances since taking over in 2014. The decision ends what a long run of more than four decades was as a coach who takes assistant coaching roles into account.
He ends with a record of 706-268 about stops in South Indiana, Milwaukee, Tennessee and Auburn. (Of these, 12 victories were abandoned by the NCAA.)
The next stop? It might just be the basketball hall of fame. Only 72 coaches have overshadowed 700 career profits (although he ends again, officially, at 694). That is at number 11 under Active Division I head coaches in career winsts and 41st of all time.
