The peak in foreign migrants who applied for competent employee visa was caused by confusion around the terminology has found a watchdog.

The NAO said that changes in the visa route of the skilled employees for foreign employees were made without understanding the impact it would have.
“The Home Office does not have a complete insight into how the visa route of the skilled employees works,” says the NAO report.
“More people use the visa route of the skilled employees than the Home Office that is expected in 2020 … This has yielded benefits.
“However, the higher than related use of the route also has consequences, such as an increase of 80 percent in people who stay permanently in the UK in 2024 compared to 2021;

The report came with the government that was looking for major changes by white papers to “restore” the “broken immigration system” of the UK.
A spokesperson for the home office said: “We welcome the report of the National Audit Office. This government has already started performing many of their recommendations, including a new affiliated approach between Skills England, the Department for Work and Pensions and the Industrial Strategy Council next to the Migration Advisory Committee.”

What is a skilled employee visa?
With a skilled employee visa you can come to the UK or stay in the UK to be eligible with an approved employer, According to the home office.
The visa came in to replace the Tier 2 (general) work visa and is available to anyone who can meet certain criteria. To be eligible, one must:
- Work for a British employer who has been approved by the home office
- Have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ (COS) from your employer with information about the role you have offered in the UK
- Do a job on the list of eligible professions
- A minimal salary – how much depends on the type of work you do and the date on which you have your COS
- Have a good level of English language
The visa takes five years before it has to be extended or renewed and after that time applicants have the right to request an indefinite period of time.
It takes about three months before the visa gets through.
