Since their T20 World Cup triumph, India has achieved clear dominance in the T20Is. They have won seven bilateral T20I series and also won the 2025 Asia Cup, which was played in the shorter format. This remarkable consistency highlights India’s strength and depth in T20 cricket, giving them a psychological edge heading into the series against New Zealand.
The first T20I will be played on January 21 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur. Given India’s recent form in T20Is, expectations are high that they will start the series strongly and put pressure on the visitors early.
What is India’s Nagpur record in T20Is?
The Indian T20I record in Nagpur was mixed but respectable. The hosts have played five matches at the venue, winning three and losing two. Their first T20I on the field came in 2009 against Sri Lanka where they suffered a 29-run defeat with Kumar Sangakkara dominating the proceedings. In the 2016 T20 World Cup, India faced New Zealand at the same venue and suffered a heavy 47-run defeat, with Mitchell Santner starring for the Kiwis.
India’s fortunes improved in the subsequent matches. In 2017, they edged past England by five runs, thanks to KL Rahul’s half-century and disciplined bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Ashish Nehra. Two years later, India defeated Bangladesh comfortably by 30 runs, with Deepak Chahar producing a sensational spell of 6/7. More recently, in 2022, India defeated Australia by six wickets in a rain-shortened encounter.
With a mixed history at Nagpur but strong recent T20I form, India will be keen to start the series on a winning note and take a 1-0 lead against the Black Caps.
