West Virginia University set team and individual records on their way to a decisive victory at the Island Resort Intercollegiate Golf Tournament 31 August – 1 September.
More than 54 holes on the Sage Run Golf Course, WVU went collective 55-under-par, six shots from second place Purdue.

Sophomore Ryan Leach was at the forefront and bought a school record 17-under for his second tournament repair as a mountaineer.
The score of the weekend shattered WVU’s previous best of 28-under in the Las Vegas Intercollegiate in 2021. The 55-Under also connects the eighteenth best score in the NCAA golf history.
The Leach score was two better than the previous number of -15 set by Mark Goetz on the Las Vegas Intercollegiate in 2021.
After the round, Leach woke up from his own performance.
“Winning individually is fun,” said Leach, “but play well like a team, and winning as a team makes it even more special.”

WVU led Purdue with five shots after the first two rounds. In the final round, the boiler makers initially started cutting WVU, led by Andre Zhu and Kentaro Nanuyama.
The mountain climbers remained close by and then straighten the ship with strong versions of senior galeb Wilson (-8 on the third round) and second-year Nicholas Turowski (-6 on the third round).
“The boys take a victory after a slow start,” said assistant -coach Will Koras, who filled the tournament for head coach Sean Covich.
“It wasn’t easy today. Kaleb (Wilson) shooting a 64 was really impressive wave when we needed it,” said Koras.
Starting on the eighth gap, Wilson took six straight birdies. He finished the round with nine birdies against one bogey.
Wilson said he was inspired by the game of his teammates.
“It’s cool to see that some boys go from a few low numbers, which gives me something to take advantage,” Wilson said.

Turowski had six birdies at the front of nine to one bogey and took another shot to throw on the rear nine.

In his first collegial tournament, first -year student Jack Michael played at the victory with one -7 over the three rounds. He finished in 18th place in general.
“It is incredible to play as good as a first -year student in your first tournament,” said coach Koras.

“I think the victory shows that when you work hard at home and do the right things, it will be rewarded over time,” said coach Koras. “I am proud of the boys, but I am even more proud of what they did before the tournament that led to these results.”

Purdue, the title defender, placed his second best score in school history. Third place Michigan also set a record for scoring teams.

The Island Resort Intercollegiate is organized by South Dakota State on Sage Run Golf Course, one of the two highly ranked courses on the Island resort and casino. The other is Sweetgrass. Blocking two days on a course on a holiday weekend and offering material support, such as hospitality, carts, the range, meals, employees and volunteers is a major commitment to the resort. A compliment to island resort.
“This tournament continues to build a strong tradition and reputation for attracting the best collegial programs from all over the country,” said Tony Mancilla, general manager of Island Resort & Casino. “Sage Run offers a unique and challenging layout that every part of the game of a player tests. We would like to see these athletes and their families experience everything that our resort and golf courses have to offer.”
Island Resort and Casino is also the old host of the Island Resort Championship on the Epson Tour, the development tour of the LPGA.
