The Bundesliga club, which planned to host matches in Minnesota and Detroit, justified its withdrawal due to the political climate in Minneapolis and strong disagreement with the current US administration’s immigration policies.
A club spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic: “Two people have been shot dead by state authorities in Minnesota. Playing in a city where there is unrest and people are being shot does not fit with our values. That will not happen to us.”
The club also pointed to the tightening of entry conditions by the US.
“It is no longer known with which players you can enter the US due to the tightened entry conditions, which, among other things, require that social media profiles from the past five years be reviewed.”
Werder Bremen has a left-wing political profile and the club was already considering withdrawing from the tour in light of the US’s increasingly far-right politics.
This season Bremen is having a hard time in the Bundesliga. They are seventeenth in the table and lost 2-1 to St Pauli on Sunday.
