Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes has made it clear he wants to play regularly as eyes turn to the World Cup next summer.

Birmingham City has a squad packed with star players and big names. It means that a number of notable Championship players have found themselves somewhat on the fringes of Chris Davies’ ranks of late.

Among them is Lyndon Dykes, who plays almost entirely off the bench for BCFC. He has made 16 Championship appearances this season, only two of which have been as a starter and only one of his appearances as a substitute has reached the 20-minute mark.

The 30-year-old powerhouse has a place in the Scotland squad that he must try to keep during the 2026 World Cup. Dykes is well aware that he needs to play regularly to keep his place.

Thanks to the partnership of Jay Stansfield and Marvin Ducksch, the two central positions in Birmingham City’s attack are occupied. Kyogo Furuhashi is also a high-profile name who competes for minutes as a striker.

Dykes also mainly served as cover and competition in League One, which is the strength of the Birmingham City team. He has scored two important goals this season, with winners against Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City.

However, opportunities in the first XI are difficult to come by. The Scot is not only aware that he needs to play to maintain his fitness, but he also needs to regularly show what he can do to keep his place in Steve Clarke’s squad.

Speak with BBC Radio 5 Live (as quoted by Birmingham Live), Dykes opened up about his situation. The BCFC forward said:

“I want to play as many games consistently as possible. We are doing very well here in Birmingham and it has been a difficult season with the limited playing time I have.

“We’ll see what happens. It will be a few months before we can start thinking about international football or the World Cup, but ultimately I want to play, I want to be as fit as possible when I go to these matches.”

“It’s going to be an exciting few months. I’m going to be doing extra things in the gym to make sure I’m in top condition.”

Is a January departure necessary for Lyndon Dykes?

Dykes’ situation is curious as we look ahead to January. He is likely to be one of many champion players who feel they need to play more ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

There is no doubt that Dykes could also find more playing time than he did at Birmingham City. He is a proven Championship striker with a solid record of goals, and the physicality he offers makes him a major threat.

Lyndon Dykes’ championship record

The Blues will be somewhat reluctant to lose that. He’s not much different from Ducksch in terms of what he offers in terms of hold-up and link-up play, but the summer signing has proven to be more effective, and at a higher level.

If Dykes wants to show what he can do ahead of the World Cup, a move elsewhere could be best for him. However, it remains to be seen whether BCFC is willing to let him go.

City would likely want to get a replacement through the doors before sanctioning a move in January.
