Nolan has earned this short-note opportunity. The reigning CFFC Welterweight Champion, he won his last four fights, three of them through emphatic knockouts with one punch. Even his losses are not bad: Ty Miller, now in the UFC; Alonzo Turner I thought in a fight that Nolan won; And Blayne Richards, who staggered Nolan with a knockout in their rematch.
However, his resume is thin outside of Richards. Most of his victories have come across opponents with striking defensive problems or almost .500 records. Yet he has a finish of 75% and trains with a strong team at Dante Rivera BJJ.
Nolan can end a fight everywhere, but it is notorously difficult to finish. On the feet, he is in favor of the teep, outsiders, roundhouse, left hook and the top hand on the right. He tends to throw them as a few shots without settings or combinations. His power, most clearly in explosive moments and his counter hook, can be overestimated when you consider the opposition. Fighters such as Aireon Tavarres and Trevor Gudde have ‘Long man of the man’, Derrick Ageday has eight knockout losses, and Richards was 33 the moment they fought. At a higher level, his lack of speed, volume and footwork can be a problem.
In terms of wrestling, he is solid from the top position, but struggles badly from his back, as can be seen against Turner. His Takedown defense is reliable, especially when he works along the fence, and he speaks well. While he decorated his entries, he still misses meaningful setups.
In general, Nolan is a strong hunter at regional level, but not yet a talent at UFC level.
How he matches Susurkaev:
Susurkaev, fresh from earning his UFC contract to the Contender Series only four days ago, returns to action after taking virtually no damage. For Nolan, Susurkaev is a brutal assignment in the short term. It is unlikely that he will get the fight against the mat, which means that he is stuck with a much sharper opponent. Susurkaev is the faster, more technical striker, and it will be seen in the clean, straight punches that defeat Nolan’s lusschoten. While Susurkaev combines his attacks with constant unpredictability, Nolan tends to load everything he throws. The only question is whether Susurkaev finds the finish. I think he does that, but not to the later rounds.
