When it comes to mapping ideas for director Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega and her colleague cast members for Wednesday Season 2, series -makers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have not thought about the monumental recordkijker of Netflix Sensation.
The reason for this is simple. Before they started filming season 1 with director and executive producer Burton, Gough and Millar already devised the story for season 2 but they left enough room for adjustments after taking the events of the first season to the public.
“We always have signposts when we come to a new project, especially a TV program,” said Gough, sitting next to Millar, in a recent zoom conversation. “You want to be sure that there is enough that you can tell several seasons of the story, but you don’t want to be put in stone because ideas evolve.”
Arrived on Netflix on Wednesday, appropriate, Wednesday Season 2 finds Ortega’s Wednesday Addams and its trusted (non-decoupled) right hand, thing, returning to Nevermore Academy for another year of studies, as well as another series of mysterious murders to investigate.

The big difference for season 2, however, is that the rest of the Addams-Familie-Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Gomez (Luis Guzmán), Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) and their Butler, Lurch (Joonas Suotamo)-not just Wednesday for her second-year-old, she’s in the second-year year in the year. Buscemi).
“We definitely wanted to bring in more of the Addams family for season 2 and expand the stories for the other characters,” said Gough. “Season 1 was 95% on Wednesday because of budget restrictions and we couldn’t tell the stories of these other characters outside of Wednesday. So I think the success of the show gave us the opportunity to really expand the world of those characters and bring in the Addams family.”
From the stories of the characters, Gough and Millar were the most enthusiastic to tell Wednesday Season 2 said Gough that he could not wait to delve into the complicated dynamics between Morticia and Wednesday. In addition, Gough wanted to investigate the complicated dynamics of Morticia with her mother, Hester Frump (Joanne Lumley), Aka Grandmama, who is introduced in season 2.
“I wanted to concentrate more on Morticia and see the two powers – one, the daughter, and one, the mother – and how Morticia is in between,” said Gough. “She is very formidable. As Miles said, I think that Wednesday her mother underestimates and I think that Hester Morticia also underestimates. With Morticia there is a calm trust and a calmness for her and she is standing against her mother at one point.”

Millar, on the other hand, could not wait to expand the story of Pugsley.
“Pugsley is the character that has been ignored by every iteration of the Addams family, in the sitcom and the films,” Millar noted. “I think that has given us a broad campus to paint our own version and I think we were lucky with Isaac [Ordonez]who plays the role. He grew up and hit puberty [since Season 1]So he came back to production and he has a lot of wonder and mysticism in his eyes. ‘
Millar is especially enthusiastic about a scene with Pugsley at the end of episode 1, which, because of not disclosing spoiler details, will not be revealed here.
“It was the perfect Pugsley Addams moment and I think it really encapsulated what we want that character is and what the audience will fall in love with,” enthusiastically Millar.
‘Wednesday’ is not the first time that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have adopted a beloved entity
As creative employees, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have a legendary history in films and television that dates from 1996, when the couple wrote the first of two episodes they wrote for the SCI-Fi series Bugs in the UK
Since that point, Gough and Millar have written the screen stories for hits such as Mel Gibson and Danny Glover’s Deadly weapon 4 and Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 2. In addition, the creatives wrote scenarios for various remarkable films, including Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson’s Shanghai afternoon and the sequel Shanghai KnightsEddie Murphy and Robert Deniro’s ShowtimeBrendan Fraser’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Lindsay Lohan and Michael Keaton’s Herbie: fully charged.
On television, the duo made the 2011 version of TVs Charlie’s Angels, as well as the adventure series The Shanara Chronicle And In the Badlands.
Although Gough and Millar have had the opportunity to make original creations, they certainly have their part of the contribution of new ideas to predetermined entities except Wednesday.
In 2001, Gough and Millar created the Superman Prequel -Series Smallville With Tom Welling in the lead role as Clark Kent, who ran for 10 seasons until 2017. In 2022 they worked together with Tim Burton in 2022 Wednesday and then wrote the scenario to the long -awaited 2024 Beetlejuice follow-up Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceWhat of course the stars of the original film Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’hara and Jenna introduces Ortega to the Deetz family.
Not surprising, Gough and Millar said their new ones are looking up Superman” The Addams family And Beetlejuice are among their most challenging projects.
‘When we did that SmallvilleThere was no Marvel Cinematic Universe [or DC Universe]. There were no walls around these big qualities, “said Gough, while Millar added,” there was no idea to tell stories in Canon. We had the freedom to do what we wanted.
“Of course we are always very respectful for everything we do with an established one property“ And try to capture the essence of what it is, “Millar noted further.” But the idea of doing our version of SMallville Or the story of Clark Kent Origin would be impossible today. We should never do what we did Smallville. It would be unheard of. We would apologize? It would be sacrilege. “
Or Smallville Gough and Millar followed Canon or not, are pleased that the series spoke with a certain group of people involved in the latest iteration of Superman.
“We say that the heresy of one generation is the gospel of the next generation, so it’s fun now when you hear the actors in the new Superman movie say that Smallville Was their first introduction to Superman or their first Lex Luthor, “said Gough smiling.” It’s great. ‘

In terms of Wednesday Challenges, the duo said they had to SupermanBefore the origin of the property, which is not as well known as the original Addams -Family TV series in the sixties and films in the early 1960s. Also seem SupermanThe stories of The Addams family started on paper – with the latter are the cartoon strips of Charles Addams inside The New Yorker Magazine in 1938.
‘Everyone likes The Addams familyBut you don’t really know much about them. They had no names [until the 1940s] And then you had the series in the 1960s and films in the 90s, “said Gough.” It was a great canvas to tell this unprecedented chapter of Wednesday’s life, but also to explore The Addams family And all that family dynamics. “
While both Wednesday And Smallville At least with their difficulty degrees, Gough and Millar, at least had the luxury of time to spread their stories in an episodic format on television.
The story of Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceOn the other hand, had to be much more compact and as such Gough and Millar gave the biggest challenge so far from a story story.
“I think Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Probably the most difficult thing to do in some respects, because it is a movie and you only have so much room to tell, “said Gough.” Plus, we wanted to honor what people love, but also give the film a reason to be in today. [We asked ourselves,] “Why do we tell this story now, 35, 36 years later?” “

“It couldn’t feel like a cynical handlebone,” Millar added. ‘[We didn’t want people to think,] “They are going to do it because it is a sequel to make money.” There had to be a reason to make the film, and that was something we also talked about with Tim. It had to have heart and soul and hopefully it did it and it was something that resonated because of the nostalgia of the original iconic film. We hope that the new film has something to add. “
Also with Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Hunter Doohan, Noah B. Taylor, Evie Templeton, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo and Victor Dorobantu as a thing, Wednesday Season 2, part 1 will premiere on Netflix on Wednesday with episodes 1-4.
Wednesday Season 2 returns with part 2 and episodes 5-8 on Wednesday 3 September.
