Former cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that the importance of major ICC events like the ODI and T20 World Cups has started to fade in recent times. Uthappa, who won the first ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, has indicated that the apex cricketing body needs to restructure the way ICC events are organized and reduce their volume to uphold the value of each ICC championship in its truest form.

Uthappa believes that the fans, viewers and the cricketing public in general are becoming overloaded with the amount of ICC events taking place every year, especially with the increasing scope of franchise-based T20 competitions. The cricketer turned commentator further suggested widening the gap between two global tournaments.

“I think the game needs to evolve from an administrative perspective. How much value do fans and audiences bring to an ICC tournament today? The novelty of it has worn off, to be very honest, and with all due respect. And I think the novelty of the ICC Championships has to be there. I think it is integral, not just for the players but also for the fans, for the viewers too. It has to mean something. There has to be a little gap,” Uthappa was quoted as saying. as said by Tribune India.

Moreover, the Coorg natives said that holding one or the other World Cup every year will not grow international cricket to further heights. He has urged the ICC to understand, take care of and act accordingly on the direction in which contemporary cricket is moving.

“We cannot or should not have an ICC Championship every year. And that is the hard truth that I think the administrators have to look at and face. You have to understand that the game is going in a certain direction, and you cannot force that direction into another space. You have to go with that and try to maximize that in the direction of where it is moving,” the former wicketkeeper-batsman concluded.

It will be the first major ICC event of 2026 Men’s T20 World Cupwhich will be held between February 7 and March 8. After just three months, the Women’s T20 World Cup gets underway, to be played in England and Wales. It will be interesting to see if Uthappa’s advice is considered by the ICC for future tournaments.
