Manchester United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has made a huge claim over Michael Carrick as his dream becomes a reality as caretaker boss.
Carrick made it two wins in as many games on Sunday as United came from behind to beat league leaders Arsenal in the Emirates.
The fairytale beginning of Carrick
After leading United to a dominant 2-0 win over neighbors Manchester City in his first match, Carrick followed that up with another excellent result, a 3-2 victory against Arsenal.
Arsenal took the lead in the 29th minute, but their lead was erased by Bryan Mbeumo, who punished a mistake at the back from Martin Zubimendi.
Patrick Dorgu then put United in the driver’s seat with a shout.
Mikel Merino equalized for the hosts and it looked like the points would be shared in North London, but Matheus Cunha delivered the decisive blow, expertly curling the ball into the back of the net past an outstretched David Raya.
The result has catapulted United into fourth place in the Premier League and are firmly in the race for a Champions League finish.
United played with the same arrogance, confidence and courage that was so evident against City a week ago. Especially in the second half, Mikel Arteta’s men had no answer to the many things that came their way.
Speaking about the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney ShowRooney claimed Carrick is taking United back to what made them so successful in the past.
Rooney speaks
Rooney said: “The change at Manchester United in the space of two games is incredible. Michael and his coaches deserve a lot of credit for that. Just putting an attitude into the players and a focus and a togetherness in them that, if we’re honest, we didn’t see under Ruben Amorim.”
“Manchester United went there with the belief that they could win the game. They didn’t create a lot of chances, but you always had the feeling that they were in good control of the game.”
“Arsenal started well. And when Manchester United conceded a goal, the reaction was great. Manchester United deserved the win.”
The former England international continued: “There’s a calmness here. I looked at the under-16s on Saturday morning and they were all there again. Michael Carrick was there, Steve Holland, Jason Wilcox, all the coaches were there and so on, which you’ve heard me talk about a lot, that connection with the academy.”
“What I saw, not just from Michael, but from the other coaches, Johnny Evans, is a real calmness and a conviction. Michael told me how good the players were and he felt he had to stop the session early because they were so good and he wanted to bottle it up. And that was proven today. An absolutely incredible performance.”
“You go back to the United DNA and United as a club and the things you want to see. I was there for 13 years, so [there are] things you want to see at that football club, which I haven’t seen there for a long time. And I thought it was absolutely brilliant.”
“The whole coaching staff all looks at the under-18s. And on Saturday morning they all look at the under-16s after training. These are all things that have happened in the past and it makes a big difference. In my view they have taken a step to bring the club a little closer to the level where they were when the club was successful.”
Rooney reiterated that he is happy with the job Carrick and his coaching staff are doing, especially considering they have outwitted arguably the two best teams in the Premier League.
United are next in action on Sunday when they host Marco Silva’s Fulham.
