The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has its 14 -month investigation into Alphabet Inc.’S Googl Goosen Self -driving company, Waymo. The investigation was started due to a series of small collisions and unexpected vehicle behavior.
What happened: The NHTSA decided to close the investigation without taking further action, as reported by Reuters on Friday. The probe was launched in May 2024 after 22 reports of potential violations of road safety and “unexpected behavior” by the robotaxis of Waymo, including 17 collisions.
The NHTSA considered two recall actions issued by Waymo and the analysis of available data before the investigation was concluded. This included a recall from 2024 to tackle a collision with a pole of the usefulness and a recall from May 2024 of more than 1,200 vehicles to update software for better detection and avoidance of roadway barriers.

Waymo has more than 1500 vehicles on the road in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin, Texas, and performs more than 250,000 fully autonomous paid journeys every week. The company wants to expand its services to New York, Miami and Washington, DC, and recently launched a service with Uber Technologies Inc. Uber In Atlanta.
Why it matters: The closure of the NHTSA tests comes at a crucial time for Waymo, which has taken considerable steps in the autonomous vehicle industry. The company has expanded its activities and has improved its technology to guarantee the safety and reliability of its self -driving vehicles.
Earlier this year, Waymo’s CEO, Tekedraemphasized the importance of a Lidar -based system for autonomous driving. This approach has proven to be effective, as evidenced by the recent closure of the research.
In addition, Waymo’s rapid growth in his RIJ-Hailing activities has positioned the company as a leader in vehicle technology without a driver. The decision of the NHTSA to close the investigation solves the position of Waymo in the autonomous vehicle industry.
