What type of person gets a personalized license plate? As someone with a sign, I’d like to think that the people who get a personalized sign have a good sense of humor and want to make other people laugh. However, I know that some people use their personalized license plates for evil purposes, but the Tennessee Supreme Court ruled that personalized license plates are not under the protection of free speech, so that’s where censorship comes into play. Fortunately, at least some states are choosing to share their list of all personalized license plate applications rejected over the course of the previous year. Illinois did just that yesterday, when it released a video of Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias reading some of the funnier vanity plates that were rejected.

According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, it received more than 55,600 requests for vanity and personalized license plates in 2025, and had to reject more than 550 “because the combinations were deemed inflammatory, profane, offensive or too difficult to read.”

From potty humor to more suggestive phrases

Being an adult child, I find it hilarious to see someone as officious as the Secretary of State of Illinois read a selection of the immature sentences. From the classic high school prank asking someone to spell the word “ICUP” to the social media brain rot trend of adding “-ussy” to the end of a word, like “PRIUSSY,” it is so funny to see Minister Giannoulias break down why these phrases were denied.

Some of the denied requests seem pretty benign to me, but I think some people might be offended by stupid things, so the state wants to err on the side of caution. I don’t think BBL, a medical procedure, should be censored, nor do I think IBPOOPN should be censored, but maybe Secretary Giannoulias never had the book “Everybody Poops” as a child.

According to NBC Chicago it is “A sign with a combination of letters and numbers costs $47, while a sign with all letters costs an additional $94 on top of the price of obtaining a sign in Illinois.” Hopefully these denied vanity plate requests will result in a refund, but for now let’s laugh at some of the funniest ones.
