Horrific scenes unfolded during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match between the Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka Women’s National Cricket Team and the Nat Sciver-Brunt-led England Women’s National Cricket Team.
Chamari Athapaththu, captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team, was stretchered off the field after sustaining an injury at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday, October 11.

Batting first in the England Women vs Sri Lanka Women, the 12th match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, the England team posted a colossal score of 253/9 on the board.

The skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt, led from the front and played an incredible knock of 117. However, she did not get proper support from the other batters who fell due to low scores.
Chasing the target, Sri Lanka got off to a terrible start as skipper and leading batsman Chamari Athapaththu went down with an injury in the sixth over.
On the third ball of the over, Chamari Athapaththu cleared a delivery for a single. Then she fell flat on the ground and was in tremendous pain. The replay also showed that she was bouncing around while recording that single.
Physio immediately came to the center and did some stretching exercises, and as Athapaththu writhed in pain, she was carried off the field. Later, SLC released a statement saying the batter was fine.
“Chamari Athapaththu is currently receiving treatment for a cramp in her right leg that she experienced while batting during the ongoing match between Sri Lanka and England,” the SLC said in an official release.

I have a lot of confidence in my bowling unit – Chamari Athapaththu
Earlier, Sri Lankan women won the toss and chose to bowl first in the match. Chamari Athapaththu said they have a lot of confidence in the bowling unit, which is quite experienced. She said:
“I want to bowl first. I have a lot of confidence in my bowling unit. We have a good, experienced bowling unit. Conditions are also good for spin. If we restrict them to 200-240, that will be good. One change for us. We struggled with our batting in the middle overs. We have been working on it. Privilege for the entire team to play at home.”
Meanwhile, England women’s skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt expressed confidence that her team would do well while batting first against Sri Lanka. She said:
“I went into bat, I’m quite happy with that. I think it will be good (the pitch). The third match is over, so the idea was to bat first, and as the day goes on it will hopefully slow down and our spinners will come into the match. Same team. Brilliant all-rounder for us and balances out the team nicely (Capsey). A few recruits have come in to help us in the nets (preparing against left arms). Take absolutely nothing with you. light. They have some brilliant match-winners in their midst and great control with their spinners in the middle.”
